Swallow Barn is a converted farm building on Ballard Farm that has been host to families for over 30 years in the tranquil landscape of Co Wicklow. The original interior has been beautifully restored, revealing the original thick structural beams and stone work. This allows for a spacious yet cosy ambience, heated by a combination of radiators and a large Waterford log stove. Doors open out onto the farmyard, where the daily comings and goings of farm life can be enjoyed from your morning cuppa.

The space
Ballard farm, facing south west into a beautiful Wicklow valley, has been held by Michael and Denise Sloan for over fifty years. In the early days the farm bred and managed a jersey dairy herd and later changed to sheep and tillage. The farm is situated a full kilometer from the road, with a glorious avenue edged by spring bulbs and mature trees.

The farmyard has a traditional courtyard design with the rear of the family house facing stables opposite, flanked by Swallow Barn (originally for livestock) to one side and The Granary (originally a grain barn) opposite. On occasion we have had joint rentals of the two houses to accommodate for family reunions and large holiday celebrations for which the situation of the two houses works perfectly.

The substantial grounds, in and around Ballard Farm, are a gardeners delight. Full credit must be given to Denise Sloan, whose creative and natural green touch is evident by the spectacular array of blooms and sweetly scented flowering throughout all seasons, including a productive vegetable garden, orchard and wild flower paddock. The large shared garden is ideal for relaxation, play and shade with the old apple tree as host to an array of jungle ropes, swings and hammock amongst the leafy branches.

Since the conversion to self-accommodation of two of the main farm buildings, Swallow Barn and The Granary, we now have many regular visitors and always enjoys meeting new guests. Both houses are open all year round.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to enjoy the farmyard and large shared garden which is ideal for ball games and running around. Barbeques are available for both houses with outdoor patio furniture to relax and enjoy the sounds and tranquility of the countryside. Guests are welcome to collect eggs from the henhouse and seasonal fruit from the orchard and hedgerows. We have a 12 foot yurt that resides in the wildflower paddock in the summer months. This is particularly popular with kids who tend to claim it as their 'den' however if you are lucky enough to be allowed in, it is a lovely space for reading a book, drawing or just closing the eyes for an afternoon snooze.

There is a small screen printing studio in what was originally the tack room. This is largely used by Denise and Stephanie Sloan however if you are interested in printing something of your own have a chat to Denise who time permitting is very happy to help you out. A great rainy day activity for children.

Other things to note
All of our animals are free range on the farm. In addition to the sheep (although we do try to keep them in the fields!) there are 3 large dogs. A working sheep dog, an Irish setter and a spaniel. They are very friendly especially with children and would like nothing more than to have be pampered all day by adoring guests. We also have a pair of geese who tend to pad off together in a field and an array of hens and guinea fowl.

Location

Brittas Bay, Wicklow, Ireland

Ballard Farm is situated at the southern part of Co Wicklow near to Brittas bay, the first of the many long sandy beaches which stretch down the coast through Wexford. We are ideally situated with plenty of activites to suit all ages near by.

Wicklow town (10 minute drive) is a charming harbor town with many interesting shops, laid back cafes, and a variety of quality restaurants and an excellent bookshop to stock up on your holiday reading. The historic town Gaol (Jail) is very popular with the older children, some evenings special scary tours are arranged. Other activities for children include a kidszone, bowling alley, swimming pool and marine activities. There is even a celebrity seal called Sammy who swims into the harbour for his early evening meal provided by The FishMan who stocks an excellent selection of fresh fish and seafood. There are a number of local country pubs all within a short driving distance that do meals also.

If you want to get out into the fresh air there is a selection of golf courses from par 3 to international championship courses within thirty minutes drive. World renowned Mount Usher (Robinsonian) gardens and Powerscourt House and garden are also near with many other gardens open throughout the summer. Horse riding is also a popular activity with plenty of trekking centres nearby. Bikes can be rented locally also, although note that whilst the farm enjoys a wonderful elevated aspect, the hills can be tough on the cycling legs so some cycling experience would be recommended!

Brittas Bay is the nearby coastline (6 km) with stunning golden sandy beaches and gentle waves, perfect for a walk any time of year. There is a small surfing school, with classes all summer and usually on the term breaks off season. And if relaxation is in mind there is an superb yoga studio just 3 kilometers from us. They offer a selection of levels and class types and dropins are welcome with a quick call before to check availability.

For the walkers out there Wicklow is a must with routes that will cater for all levels. Going west, inland to the mountains, Glendalough was one of the most important early christian settlements in Europe and makes an inspiring visit with many walking trails, for both beginners and advanced, starting at this point.

Dublin is only an hours drive away although most guests like to opt for the rail route which takes the same time but travels along the coastline.

Back on the farm there are bar-b-qs for your use and most weeks there is some seasonal activity happening on the farm.
