The space

Beautifully converted, very spacious barn facing the Pyrenees and the chateau of Montsegur. Situated in tiny hamlet, Mouche les Esqueilles, Occitan for "hill of the cow bell maker". Peaceful rural living, meadows full of wild flowers in Spring, walks in beech wood behind the house, big skies at night, easy access to local village of Puivert, to lakes and mountains.
This architect renovated barn conversion offers very generous accommodation with exposed cedar carpentry, wooden floors throughout and lots of natural light. Please see the plans (with photos) for arrangement of rooms and beds.
On the ground floor there's a large open kitchen-dining room, a sitting room/bedroom (king sized bed platform) and a shower room. All rooms open onto the wooden deck to the south via double French doors and into the garden area from the kitchen.
On the first floor there's a hall reading area, a double bedroom, a bedroom with 3 single beds and a bathroom. There's also an enormous studio bedroom (king sized bed plus futon sofa/bed) with en suite shower room and Juliette balcony.
Ample parking for 3 cars. Barbeque and deck furniture, garden.
For keen walkers there are many walks on the GR circuits (grande randonnées). Bird watching, white water rafting, horse riding, gliding, hang gliding, skiing etc.
Swimming: 5 minutes drive to local lake at Puivert (beach, children's supervised area, pedalos, cafe and Wednesday night markets throughout the summer); 15 mins to the much larger lake at Montbel, Chalabre (swimming, pedalos, windsurfing, canoes, cafes). Perpignan is a beautiful drive approx an hour and a half away with very easy access to all the beaches of the coastline stretching north to Narbonne and south past Argeles and Colliure into Spain.
Chateaux: There is a magnificent chain of Cathar castles stretching all the way to the Mediterranean - Montsegur and Foix in the Ariege. The local chateau of Puivert was home to the troubadours of the middle ages. You can also visit the chateaux of Querigut, Peyrepeteuse, Puillerans, Queribus. The walled city of Carcassonne is an hour's drive via Limoux.
Wine tastings and visits: Limoux (35 mins) famous for its sparkling Blanquette plus many domains which conduct tours and tastings all the way to the coast.
Markets: Esperaza, Lavelanet, Mirepoix, Foix, Limoux
Local villages: Puivert is a 5 min drive. Belesta and Chalabre are 15 mins drive for boulangerie, supermarket, restaurants, post office and pharmacy.

We had a great time in this spectacular location. The kids loved swimming in he lake and playing with Kobe the dog and the adults loved taking in the view from the deck with a glass of wine. The walks through the woods are also well worth doing. Thanks for your hospitality Pete and Jackie.

The beautiful house is set in a valley together with just 2 other houses. We have enjoyed its fantastic views and relaxing atmosphere for a week in July with my extended family. We were 7 adults and 2 children plus 3 dogs. Especially the large kitchen-diner was a warm and welcoming space for all of the family. The house easily fit our 9 people and could have accomodated at least another couple. Don't miss out on walking along the lane over the neighbouring field at sunset! The nightsky is absolutely fantastic - you can see the milky way! Peter and Jacky are very helpful and warm hosts! There are many castles nearby and the small lake in Puivert is ideal for families. We would definitely come again.

We stayed at the house during 4 days and had a great time. It is a good place to relax. The house has plenty of space inside and outside. Kitchen, rooms and bathrooms are well equipped and have everything you need. The hosts are very friendly and are available to help at any time.

What a beautiful place! My friends and I stayed for a week and are so sad to have left the stunning and tranquil surroundings of Midi-Pyrenees and this delightful barn. Peter and Jackie were incredibly helpful hosts who are full of useful local knowledge and struck a perfect balance between being very approachable whilst also allowing us to maintain our privacy. The barn itself is spacious, clean, modern and well equipped. I would strongly recommend staying here for an unforgettable trip. We already miss the mountains, the cows and Kobi. Thanks again!
