Our party of two couples spent a very enjoyable week at Kalihiwai Beach House in February 2017. We loved the location, in a quiet residential neighborhood along the Kalihiwai River where it meets Kalihiwai Bay. The beach is easily accessible by walking across a gravel road onto the sandy riverbank and then wading through the clear shallow end of the river. There is a nice view of the riverbank and beach from the lanai, a favorite spot to have coffee or read a book. The layout of the house worked quite well for the four of us and could have easily accommodated a third couple in the remaining bedroom. We bought groceries mostly at the Foodland in Princeville (about 10 minutes away) and ate about half of our evening meals at home. With the windows and doors open (all screened), the house stayed very comfortable overnight. However, if you are not familiar with the wild chickens that are everywhere on Kauai, consider yourself warned that the roosters crow at all hours of the day and night. Despite the noisy fowl, we would strongly consider renting the Kalihiwai Beach House on a future trip to Kauai.

I stayed a week at the house at Kalihiway Beach, and wow! It is still fresh on my mind, and I wish I'd be back there! :-) The three bedroom house is large, clean and comfy. Every bedroom has its own toilet. One of the bedrooms has its own shower. Two of the bedrooms share one large bathroom with a spectacular shower on top of a jacuzzi from which you can see the trees through the windows as you're taking a shower (make sure you look up, and you have the feeling as if you're in the middle of the tropical rain forest) :-) There is Internet access, but only a cable model (no wifi). I knew this beforehand, and I brought my own Wifi router, since there were five of us. I attached my wifi router to the cable modem and had to power-cycle it, but then it worked like a charm. There seems to be cable TV but I didn't use it. The house also has a carport downstairs with boogie boards, a cooler and beach chairs. The kitchen is in a good state and has pretty much everything that you might need. The location: the house is on the North side of the island. I think it's the prettiest part of the island especially when you compare it to the hustle & bustle of the more touristic parts. But being in the North also has its disadvantages, especially when it comes to (grocery) shopping. There's a Foodland close by in Princeville, but it's pricey! My advice is to hit one of the big supermarkets in Lihue or Kapaa if you plan to self-cater and only buy at the Princeville Foodland in emergencies (and when you do, get a member card, it saves you quite a bit). The house is right next to Kalihiwai Beach, BUT you need to cross a small river first. Look at (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps and you'll see what I mean. If you drive to the beach, it actually will take you a while, even though it's just a few feet as the crow flies, it is more than a mile driving to the beach (and you might get stuck in a traffic jam because of roadworks) because you have to go all the way around. The quicker way is just to wade across the river (although it's probably 4 feet deep). In this case the boogie boards come in very handy because you can use them to transport your (dry) items. But Kalihiwai beach isn't the nicest beach around -people go there to let their dogs roam around. Better to head to Hanalei beach, or if you're walking you could head to Anini beach which is 10-15 minutes by foot. Keep this in mind when considering the property. I tried stand-up paddling (you'll need to rent a board) for the first time - just in front of the house there is Kalihiwai river to paddle up - spectacular! Otherwise, this place is fantastic!
