Step into the story! This authentically restored 1550's castle takes you into its colourful history and let's you feel the motto of the founding Fogartie clan: Fleadh agus Fáilte! Be prepared for a real castle: despite the modern comforts, there is nothing faux or 'manor house' here. Quiet but not isolated, this castle is easy to get to from Dublin, Shannon and Cork. It's a great place for a family reunion or central base for trips to golf courses all across the country. Experience the spirit!
The space
Killahara Castle was built with more generous proportions than most castles of this type. Consequently it has ample living space, easier access between floors - larger rooms and more of them. There are 7 spacious bedrooms, including 2 suites, 2 doubles, 2 singles and 1 twin. (Video tour details below.)
In our renovation, we integrated conservation imperatives with modern living requirements - so the plumbing, electrics and heating at every level are all what you would need if living fulltime in a building like this.
Nevertheless, it is a five-storey building with spiral stone stairs. There is no bedroom at ground level. (The first one is one floor up.) For any of your party with mobility issues, please check that they are OK with this. If there are any children in the party, please note that you must supervise them at all times on the stairs on the castle ramparts.
Also note, it is a real castle rather than a castellated manor house. Despite the castle being prepared optimally for your comfort and enjoyment, it features some exposed stone walls, crevices, recesses - and guests sometimes spot a (non-poisonous) spider.. so please check that none of your party is phobic.
