This studio type apartment is on the second floor of a cir. 1863 building a short distance from the middle of downtown Grand Rapids. It is a bit of a unique set up based on the original layout of an old boarding house. My goal was to provide functional and affordable rather than compete with downtown hotels. It is nothing fancy :-) The apartment is cleaned and laundered in between guests. The bedroom has a queen bed and a loft twin bed.

The space

Cozy space with some new and some older charm. There is a queen bed and a loft twin bed. Please note: It is more kitchenette than full kitchen. There is a "hot plate", microwave, and small fridge. There is not a stove/oven in this unit. The shower is in the same room as the kitchenette (due to space constraints). It is a unique set up, but hopefully everything you need to stay for a day or a few.

Guest access

There is a front door with a keypad. Please verify with me that you have the correct address and code at least 24 hours prior to your arrival. I have more than one apartment at this location. My preference is that guests do not "explore" the building and/or disturb others during their stay.

Interaction with guests

Let me know if you have any questions or need recommendations for the area. I have lived here for about 15 years and know Grand Rapids well. I am happy to provide toiletries or any items you need to make your stay more comfortable.

Other things to note

This is not an apartment for strangers. I can maybe accommodate 4 guests by adding an airbed in the kitchenette area, but more than that will probably be cramped. Check out my other listing at the same location for bigger groups.

While this is a popular spot for "beer-cations", and other fun downtown GR adventures, there are likely other guests and regular tenants in other apartments. Please be respectful. Other than that the place is yours for the duration of your stay.

This works as a crash pad, but I️ wouldn’t stay here again with family, definitely not with a toddler (unsafe) or in the cold season (no traditional heat, just blankets and space heaters that blow the power). Or ever, really. Yet, it lived up to the description posted: humble, make-shift apartment, an old building, simple. You stay there for the location, but just look at it as if there are zero amenities. Then you’ll be pleasantly surprised instead of the opposite! We changed our view to, “we’re just camping out in a wooden tent for two days” and it helped a lot. There were clean towels and bedding but the house itself is dusty, dirty, moldy. Theres WiFi, but no heat and you turn the hot water on and wait five minutes for it to heat up. We were so cold, even with the two space heaters (the only heat source) going constantly. There’s an overflow room for extra guests but they have to walk through your bedroom to get to the bathroom and kitchen. All in all, Rich was a quick responding host, and fixed the power for us when the fuse blew, he also let us have a late check out, which I️ think was the least he could’ve done. He was available and willing to help when we texted or messaged him. So, we made it work for two days, but I️ do not recommend.

Response from Richard:
Rebekah raises some points, that I don't disagree with. The building is really old, it is a second floor walk up, and you should not expect a single family home, or downtown hotel. It is a simple alternative at an affordable price. Most guests appreciate they are saving over $100 per night and the majority of my reviews reflect that.

Another great stay. We've stayed in two of his properties now and both were great. Definitely plan on returning in the future. Location is fantastic as well.

Easy to find, plenty of parking close by. Easy access to building. Long flight of stairs in a narrow staircase (in case you have heavy or bulky luggage). Close to food and entertainment.

Richard’s place was perfect for what we needed—a place close to downtown to lay our heads during our stay for a wedding. Cozy and definitely affordable! Good communication, easy access.
