Wake up at the feet of Pele with an ocean view behind you! Charming one bedroom off grid, eco-cabin in sunny Kalapana. Sweeping ocean views and lava viewing from front yard. This is once in a life time bucket list material! Come check it off yours!

The space

Cabin is inside of Kalapana gardens past the tourist parking and guard shack. Front row viewing of lava and closer, VIP access to lava hiking and exploring. Free parking on site at cabin so bypass all the tourist parking hassles! Closest rental cabin to lava and only one on the main county maintained road in Kalapana Gardens. All cars can park easily on my property. Ocean views on two sides of cabin and volcano view on the third! seperate bedroom with lanai, queen size bed with ocean views and amazing star gazing in the clear night skies. Solar powered cabin with full refrigerator and freezer, high speed wireless internet, propane dual burner cook top, french press for coffee, pots, pans and utensils. Cabin has hard wood floors and built in sky lights to allow lots of natural light in during the day. Compost toilet which we use to make soil to replant palm trees and native Hawaiian species on the scorched lava earth. Cabin also has an open air propane heated hot shower! Perfect for couples or small families. Enjoy the best sunrises and sunsets in the world all from the raised viewing lanai/yoga deck out back.

The property is covered in papaya trees, banana trees & pineapples. It also has cherry trees, mango, avacado, dragon fruit, lime, coconut and several variations of palms. There's also numerous Ti trees which in Hawaiian culture are used to line the borders of your property to ward off evil spirits. Cook pine trees, beautiful and bright coleus bush's, orchids, plumeria and bougainvillea. There's also hundreds of different small succulents that line the paths in the back of the property. Look closely to find these exotic gems that thrive in the lava and abundance of sun that Kalapana is blessed with. Make sure to stay on the paths so you don't crush any of these lovely small plants. I love the blank canvas the land provides and I'm excited to watch my garden and beautiful plants grow!

You'll be surrounded by the energy of an active volcano and the deep blues of the Pacific ocean this is truly a once in a life time opportunity! Seize it!

Guest access

Guest will have access to Kalapana gardens which is past the tourist parking and security gate. On site parking and will be registered with front gate upon arrival. Full access to one bedroom off grid cabin, refrigerator and freezer, wireless high speed internet, compost toilet, raised viewing lanai/yoga deck and property gardens, paths and secret, extremely private beach called Foxes landing.

Within driving distance to all of lower Puna attractions. New Kaimu black sand beach, clothing optional Kahena black sand beach, Pohoiki surf spot and lava boat tours, thermal heated tide pools, kapoho tide pools for snorkling (ranked 8th best in world), lava tree park and the town of Pohoa for shopping, food and supplies.

Interaction with guests

This is an active small farm with lots of small fruit trees and herbs so my son and I will try to be there to greet you at the cabin in Kalapana gardens. Please follow directions provided because GPS can be wrong at times on the Big Island. We'll get you registered to come and go onto the property. I'll do walk thru of property with you or send you check in directions. I'll be by daily or every other day to water plants in the garden and check on the toilet and shower. I also do private and group tours, own a dirt bike so can shuttle closer to the lava flow! I generally keep to myself when around but can also talk your ear off. I usually let the guest decide level of interaction. I love to spread the aloha so any questions you have feel free to ask!

Other things to note

For more then two guests the extra bed is currently an airbed.

My cabin is a true entire house/cabin for rent. Beware of other rentals in Kalapana gardens that say entire space but are actually multiple rooms or buildings on the property for rent. Your privacy is limited and you may actually be sharing the property with other guests! Also read the details & reviews of these properties that are similarly priced as they don't have kitchens, refrigerators or any way to cook food. Some only have sporadic hot water for showers and don't supply enough power to run most common appliances like lights at night! Make sure you know what your paying for before renting at any other place in Kalapana gardens. There are current rentals that are listed as entire spaces that are actually several duplex's all on the same property! One that's listed for $109 a night actually has several rooms for rent and as many as 14 people, 6 cars will be on property at any time. Look at the last picture on my page. Instead of making their place nicer for guests they've tried to cram more duplexs on their already crowded properties! At my cabin you'll be the only guests on my property and it's off grid but equipped with everything a normal house would have like a kitchen, fridge, freezer, cook top, French press, cooking utensils and hot water for hot showers! I've spent time and money improving my rental for current and future guests... not finding space to cram more rental units in! If privacy, nice accommodations, hot water are what your looking for then my cabin is what you want. If overpriced, crowded and no amenities are what you want then look at rentals close by my cabin that are priced $109-$111.

This is a eco cabin and we try malama the earth. So please keep showers to a reasonable time. Also because I'm on catchment I might run out of water for the shower if you waste the water. Mahalo for understanding.

Shoes are recommended out here as cuts to the feet are very common.

Don't feel like walking or biking the 8 mile round ťrip hike to the lava? I offer 25% discounts on my shuttling services. I own properties out past the two main security gates and have a vehicle pass. I can do one way shuttles that cuts off 2.5 miles of the 8 mile hike or round trip shuttles to cut off 5 miles or V.I.P. quad rides that will bring you the full 8 miles right up to the flowing lava and right back to the cabin. Save time and money by booking with me. Have friends or family that also wants to go? No problem I have a van and can haul up to 8/9 people and their gear all at once! Don't pass up this amazing time saving opportunities!!! Ride in A.C., kick back and enjoy the ride while you learn some new things about the volcano, Hawaii and Hawaiian culture by someone who actually lives on the lava.. unlike those other tour companies with cram packed vans, guides who don't even live on the lava, are over priced and have the same pre scripted narrative they say every time! Boring! Who wants boring? If your booking with me I don't allow boring!!!

House Rules
No smoking
Not suitable for pets
Check in time is 2PM - 12AM (midnight)

Ok to smoke outside but please throw butts away.

Stay on paths and respect the land. If you have kids always watch them and please don't allow them to move any rocks, drift wood or other things I've used to make garden beds and decorate the property and paths.

Respect the neighbors and the quiet of Kalapana. Quiet time is from 10pm until 7am.

Do not leave any food out! Even fruits, veggies, bread, ECT. Put everything in the fridge or sealed away. If you leave food out bugs & mice will come. Please help me keep the cabin clean and pest free. Wipe down counters with bleach cleaning spray that is provided and in the kitchen area after cooking and do dishes right away. I keep the cabin extremely clean but this is the deep country and the pests are resilient in the tropics so help me keep them out of my cabin.

The cabin is currently on a small water catchment system for the shower. Please take reasonable amount of time in shower and please don't waste water! I provide plenty of drinking water and cooking/dishes water also which is different from the shower catchment water.

If you need anything or you feel something doesn't meet your expectations please tell me in person or call/text me. I'll address it right away or work with you on a solution to fix it. Communication is key and "talking story" is Hawaiian culture. Please don't feel like something's wrong and not tell me while your staying at the cabin and then mention this problem in a review after you leave. I work hard to keep the cabin clean and want all my guests happy. I take all reviews personally and take pride in my cabin and in hosting. Any suggestions on how to improve are always welcome.

Have fun!

Loved it here for a few days very quirky location like being on jurasic park .great set up with just enough gear for our stay.great location for a hike to the lava flow into the sea but at our stay, for safety reasons we couldn't get too close and it was signposted off. If you do go for a walk/bike ride DONT belive the signs its not 4 miles took us with a quick pace 3.5 hours round trip take plenty of water too. Loved it chears Sean. Oh and dont leave the windows open at night because when it rains IT RAINS

This was such a cool experience! The bedroom could definitely be described as glamping, it is a screened in room with just a bed and no electricity. Once you open all the windows and screen door it was very cool and comfortable, even after a quite hot and humid day. The main building, while off grid, has everything modern - plugs for chargers, two burner stove, fridge, etc. I have to say my favorite part was that the loveseat was a repurposed bench seat from a van - so clever!! As of the writing of this review, the lava viewing area is just over 3.5 miles away. It's a nice flat gravel road and when the moon is bright and the sky is clear you don't even need a flashlight. Walking and biking are not difficult on the terrain, just make sure you are ready for the length. This is such a unique and special area, I can't say enough about how amazing it is to see the neighborhood being built up right on the lava flow and to see plants growing right up through the cracks. The property also has really nice rock garden features all around which are really cool.

We had a great stay! We were able to make meals and have a nice quiet time at night. Loved sleeping in the little separate cabin... Great sunrise. About 1 hour+ drive to entrance of volcanoes, but great access to lava flow and viewing. Area is just beyond bike rentals where you can rent a bike for a 4 mile ride out to an area you can see lava pour into the ocean or hike up to a lava flow coming from the volcano.

This rustic place was recommended by another friend in New York, and we could not have been more charmed by its simple elegance. It sits right on top of the reclaimed lava land that had been the Kalapana development. The gas range heats your coffee, the fridge keeps your wine chilled, and the battery-powered shower wipes away the dust kicked up from riding bikes to the lava flowing into the ocean. The smaller sleeping cabin is cozy, with just enough space for the double bed, and the wind flows through all night for a most comfortable sleep. Don't miss this place!

We had a great time staying at Sean and Zorro's place. The stars at night were amazing. We were lucky to stay during great weather. We really enjoyed our stay. The locals were really friendly. One took us out on a private tour to see the lava. My husband could have lived at their place forever. Some things to note. There is a big crack in the lave between the main house and the sleeping quarters. Sean has installed motion sensor lights and walkway lamps so you can see where you are stepping at night. Also, the bathroom is on the outside of the main house. You have to go down 3-4 steep stairs without a handrail to get to the toilet. Once again Sean installed a motion sensor light. Just watch your step and this would not be a good place for young children or someone who is not steady on their feet. For us, this place was probably one of the best places we have stayed at on air bnb. Next time we come to the Big Island (and Sean has room) we will be staying here again.

Single Dad raising a five year old boy in Hawaiian style living. Where everyone is ohana, mālama ia Hawai'i (take care of Hawai'i), share the aloha and no shoes and shirt are the norm. For fourteen years I have been fortunate to be a Hawaii resident. Living on multiple islands I decided Hawaii was home and sunny Kalapana was the paradise I was searching for.
We purchased and manage two different local properties here on Air bnb.
Raising my son Zorro in Hawaiian style promotes his interaction with guests.
Feel free to ask him for his 5 yr old opinion. He is fun.
Surfing, fishing, hiking and gardening are what we do anytime we can.
