A spacious (160 sq m) open-plan first floor loft style apartment. The entire gable end is comprised of an impressive floor to ceiling 12-metre long window. 2 bedrooms with en-suite. Mezzanine with 2 single mattresses. doub sofa bed. Modern kitchen.

The space

A huge, light and airy space. The open-plan modern kitchen is well equipped and a great place to cook. There are 2 sofas in the seating areas and a large dinning table. Both bedrooms have showers and whirlpool baths to unwind. The bathroom ceilings have large sky-light windows to gaze at the passing clouds or stars while in the bath. The apartments is accessed via an external stairway and is unfortunately not suitable for anyone with decreased mobility.

Guest access

The whole apartment is for guests and is not shared. The Tractor Shed Loft Apartment is situated in Glensallagh Gardens and you may come across us (or others guests staying in our other property) in the garden. You are welcome to enjoy the garden at you leisure. There is a great place to sit and relax and we have a huge fire fit (shared) for BBQ and just sitting around a fire. The apartment is on the first floor (for our American guests this is the second floor) which is accessed via an external industrial stairway which is not suitable for persons with decreased mobility.

Interaction with guests

Our house is also situated in the garden and our door is always open should you need us. That said, we like to provide our guests with privacy while they are here and we keep a low profile. We have been known to have a drink/afternoon tea/BBQ/drinks with guests and we enjoy meeting new people. Our little Jack Russell terrier Pola enjoys meeting primates - especially if they make a fuss of her - but we recommend supervision with small children who can make her nervous. Our old Border Collie, Monty, is a gentle old fella who will also come out to greet you!

Other things to note

We have a wind turbine (which is very quiet) - this provides some of the electricity you will be using. The hot water in the Tractor Shed Loft Apartment is generated by solar panels.

This is a spectacular space with real wow factor. It is also very well appointed and comfortable with a properly equipped kitchen and everything you need for a relaxing stay. Richard and Jules are friendly, welcoming hosts who left delicious local milk and butter for us, as well as fantastic eggs from their own chickens, plus courgettes, salad and greens from their poly tunnels. There is a real feeling of privacy and seclusion, yet you are close to all the wonders of West Cork - farmers markets at Skibbereen and Schull, beautiful beaches such as Barleycove, walks at Three Castles and Sherkin, the Mizen Head drive and a plethora of great places to eat and drink. We'll definitely be back!

We would recommend this place to anyone who wants a retreat from life in the fast lane!! The Tractor Shed is wonderfully tucked away, reached by a windy, bumpy, tree-lined drive. We were welcomed by Jules and shown around the beautiful setting which is the Tractor Shed. The light and space hit you first and then how warm and cosy it feels. Lovely home-made brown bread and fresh eggs were waiting for us and made us feel very welcome and at home. The kitchen is well-stocked for plates, glasses, cutlery, pots and pans. The dining table is big enough to seat 12 and there are lots of books and board games to keep you occupied. There was always hot water when we needed it, lots of towels and plenty of wardrobe space although just a few more hangers might be useful! We felt so at home and comfortable right from the start and could not recommend this place enough if you want to completely get away from the hustle and bustle of urban living or just want to have some peace and be surrounded by a beautiful rural setting. Hens and very chatty geese add to the charm of the place! Our only complaint - one week was not long enough! We will have to return.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place. Perfect to escape from the city. I falled in love with it when we searched airbnb. Tractor shed is bigger than its looks. Richard looked after us with eggs, potatoes and his amazing salad. That salad, OMG, I want it every day of my life. I wish we had a chance to use that amazing fire place. We found ourselves too busy running around as we wanted to visit as many places possible. You never know, we might go there again. xxx

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the tractor shed loft apartment. The apartment itself is beautiful and spacious and great for cooking dinners. The location is perfect for hanging out in the lovely gardens or day tripping around West Cork. Richard was a wonderful host, who made us feel most welcome. Our children loved their time with the geese and dogs, and dancing around a bonfire as the sun set.

The Tractor Shed is a very very special place. From arrival through Richards 'bosky tunnel' to his magical woods and being shown into our stunning rooms for the weekend all was beyond our expectations. Thank you so much for all the hospitality and great local advice for our explorations of West Cork.

Richard is a retired exploration geologist and Jules is a medical anthropologist. Both us us have traveled extensively (both having worked in sub-Saharan Africa, in Richard's case for over 40 years!) We also loved our experiences travelling in India. Richard also spent 5 years sailing on his boat in the Indian Ocean. Since retiring in 2008 Richard has been working tirelessly on developing our woodland garden and vegetable plots. Jules lectures part time in London (some commute!) and enjoys growing flowers & designing the gardens. We sell our unusual salad leaves, veg and edible flowers to local organic and artisan cafes and restaurants in the area.
We are keen cooks and are lucky to have excellent artisanal food products on our doorstep here in West Cork.
We enjoy chatting to our guests and sharing a drink with them on occasion but also happy to keep a low profile. We are here if you need us. We can of course advise you on where to go and where to eat etc.
We also share our home with Pola (5 year old long haired Jack Russell terrier) who enjoys tummy rubs and hunting rabbits and Monty (a 10 year old Border Collie) who is quite shy until you get to know him.
Richard can speak enough French to get by and we both speak a little Swahili.
