Description

The space

A huge, light and airy space. The open-plan modern kitchen is well equipped and a great place to cook. There are 2 sofas in the seating areas and a large dinning table. Both bedrooms have showers and whirlpool baths to unwind. The bathroom ceilings have large sky-light windows to gaze at the passing clouds or stars while in the bath. The apartments is accessed via an external stairway and is unfortunately not suitable for anyone with decreased mobility.

Guest access

The whole apartment is for guests and is not shared. The Tractor Shed Loft Apartment is situated in Glensallagh Gardens and you may come across us (or others guests staying in our other property) in the garden. You are welcome to enjoy the garden at you leisure. There is a great place to sit and relax and we have a huge fire fit (shared) for BBQ and just sitting around a fire.

Interaction with guests

Our house is also situated in the garden and our door is always open should you need us. That said, we like to provide our guests with privacy while they are here and we keep a low profile. We have been known to have a drink/afternoon tea/BBQ/drinks with guests and we enjoy meeting new people. Our little Jack Russell terrier Pola enjoys meeting primates - especially if they make a fuss of her!

Other things to note

We have a wind turbine (which is very quiet) - this provides some of the electricity you will be using. The hot water in the Tractor Shed Loft Apartment is generated by solar panels.

A magical haven in a remote spot - we've had a wonderful family holiday here and would highly recommend. Highlights included a warm welcome from the host, tasty home grown produce on the doorstep, an incredible open plan living space and a magical BBQ set in a wild location with breathtaking views. We will be back!

We loved it!! Super rural location and accommodation, such a wonderful space within the shed with expansive views and the comfort of a hotel. We were greeted by the geese and the ducks as we arrived, which made the kids giggle. Jules and Richard made us so welcome, the eggs and the salad leaves, mmmm. We loved Monty and Pola, such lovable dogs. The peace and quiet of not having any internet, no TV...heaven! We loved the forest walks on the property and roasting marshmallows at the firepit. Location is close to Ballydehob, take note to turn left at the US Mail post box to find your piece of heaven. Super location to visit the West Cork peninsulas. We will be back!!!

We had a wonderful stay at the Tractorshed. Ballydehob is a great little village, with Budds restaurant and Levis' bar being well worth visiting. Richard & Jules were great and interesting hosts. Five stars.

We had a fantastic time at The Tractor Shed! Beautiful location, amazing large space with real rustic charm. Richard, Jules and the animals were all welcoming and we ate wonderful produce grown right on the property. No wi-fi there, and the driveway was a little bit tough going for our little hire car, but neither of these things really mattered - all part of the countryside experience!! I would highly recommend this place to anyone!

Response from Richard & Jules:
Dear Emma, Thank you for your thoughtful review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and the fresh garden produce. We clearly show on our listing that we do not have Wi-Fi and the drive can be negotiated easily if one drives slowly - which is a must here as we have water fowl and dogs wandering around. We're very happy it didn't spoil your stay and hope to see you this way again sometime. Best wishes, Richard & Jules

Richard and Jules have created a magnificent space on their farm in West Cork. It's huge, light and airy, unbelievably quiet, the perfect place to escape. They are thoughtful, kind hosts and the surrounding countryside offers endless possibilities for walks. And when it rains (as it does, often), you can turn up the music on their excellent sound system and dance in their lovely large space.

Response from Richard & Jules:
Dear Paul, Thank you for your charming review. We are only sorry we didn't get to see some of that dancing! Kind regards, Richard & Jules

Richard and Jules were great hosts and the space is so cool - we really loved staying here. We were lucky with the weather and ended up spending a lot of our time at the massive outdoor fire place they have built - we cooked dinner there one night with visiting friends and had a great time. Another thing worth mentioning are the absolutely amazing salad greens that Richard and Jules grow - the best I have ever had. Incredible varieties of Asian greens and other lettuces mixed with flowers - you almost didn't need a dressing they were that good. Their other veggies (potatoes, courgette/zuchini, peas and beans during our time) were also wonderful. Richard and Jules were also very friendly and nice and gave us a tour of the gardens. We were there for only 3 nights and it was too short! Would love to come back.

Response from Richard & Jules:
Dear Elke, Thank you for your lovely review. We are delighted that you spent so much time up at the fire pit - it makes all our planning and work worthwhile. We are also very happy you enjoyed the garden offerings (we are now on sweet-corn and tomatoes!) Please do come back and visit us one day. Until then, best wishes, Richard & Jules

Richard is a retired exploration geologist and Jules is a medical anthropologist. Both us us have traveled extensively (both having worked in sub-Saharan Africa, in Richard's case for over 40 years!) We also loved our experiences travelling in India. Richard also spent 5 years sailing on his boat in the Indian Ocean. Since retiring in 2008 Richard has been working tirelessly on developing our woodland garden and vegetable plots. Jules lectures part time in London (some commute!) and enjoys growing flowers & designing the gardens. We sell our unusual salad leaves, veg and edible flowers to local organic and artisan cafes and restaurants in the area.
We are keen cooks and are lucky to have excellent artisanal food products on our doorstep here in West Cork.
We enjoy chatting to our guests and sharing a drink with them on occasion but also happy to keep a low profile. We are here if you need us. We can of course advise you on where to go and where to eat etc.
We also share our home with Pola (5 year old long haired Jack Russell terrier) who enjoys tummy rubs and hunting rabbits and Monty (a 10 year old Border Collie) who is quite shy until you get to know him.
Richard can speak enough French to get by and we both speak a little Swahili.
