The well appointed Lodge was rebuilt from dereliction in 2003. Overlooking the Blackstairs Mountains, it is a peaceful setting in rural Carlow, ideally located for touring. You'll be at peace and in comfort. Wifi included.
The Lodge sleeps five very comfortably. The peaceful, rural setting has enchanted our guests, including families here to tour, business guests and golfers playing at nearby Mount Wolseley. Surrounded by rolling green hills with a beautiful view of Leinster's Blackstairs Mountains, you are within easy touring distance of Wexford, Wicklow, Kilkenny, and Carlow towns. The famous Altamont Gardens, haunted Huntington Castle and brewers of the tasty O'Hara's Beer are close by.
A fully furnished cottage (kitchen, bed & bath linen, etc) and breakfast starter pack (milk, bread, butter, eggs, coffee, tea, sugar) are part of the package.
We like to greet you and will give you as much guidance as you seek. Otherwise, we tend to let guests do their thing.
You'll need wheels. Most people prefer a car to a bike, as Ardattin is the nearest village (3km), with Tullow, Clonegal, Bunclody and Carlow offering a huge range of shopping, restaurants and other attractions within a 10-20 km radius. We are near the River Slaney with 3km of river beat and woodland for our guests to explore. Fishing (trout and sometimes salmon) is popular on the Slaney, from March-August - please enquire. Riding, golf (Mount Wolseley), micro-brewery, haunted castles (Huntington, Shankill), award-winning gardens (Altamont, Hardymount), and kayaking (via a local outdoor adventure company) provide a surprisingly rich and diverse set of activities for our guests - though many opt to curl up with a book and a cup of tea and enjoy the peace and quiet!
You've got the house to yourself. There is lots of outdoor space. Guests have enjoyed picnics on the lawn, with lovely views of rolling hills and the Blackstairs mountains. Enjoy woodland and river walks along the River Slaney. Note that the walking can be rough in summer as growth is rampant!
Interaction with guests
We live a couple of km down the road and will be there if you need us. Usually our guests are there to have their headspace and tend to be great self-caterers.
Other things to note
We discount our rent rate generously for weekly and monthly stays, but utilities are not included for those longer stays. Note that electricity can vary from €8 to €20+ for a week, and oil for the central heating is measured and charged separately. There is a timer for the heating, but nonetheless the cost of oil means that heating can double the total utilities charge.
We ask that all recyclable items are washed.
The utility room contains the washing machine and dryer. This separate room is shared with the residents of the adjacent house, who can access it from outside, so your privacy is maintained.
Welcome! Please note that we're in a rural location so most guests rely on a car for transport. Guests staying for a week or more are charged for their utilities usage, and are responsible for recycling and waste management (facilities and instructions are provided!). Thank you. Pam
Mom of four, yoga teacher, lover of walks in the woods. We try to communicate clearly what it's like living in our beautiful rural spot, and hope our guests love the place for what it is: an increasingly rare clean-air, clean-water (both cottages have their own well) place to potter around and relax. Writers, teachers, artists families and executives all seem to revel in the "slow holiday" aspect of the place.
