The well appointed Lodge was rebuilt from dereliction in 2003. Overlooking the Blackstairs Mountains, it is a peaceful setting in rural Carlow, ideally located for touring. You'll be at peace and in comfort. Wifi included.

The space

The Lodge sleeps five very comfortably. The peaceful, rural setting has enchanted our guests, including families here to tour, business guests and golfers playing at nearby Mount Wolseley. Surrounded by rolling green hills with a beautiful view of Leinster's Blackstairs Mountains, you are within easy touring distance of Wexford, Wicklow, Kilkenny, and Carlow towns. The famous Altamont Gardens, haunted Huntington Castle and brewers of the tasty O'Hara's Beer are close by.

A fully furnished cottage (kitchen, bed & bath linen, etc) and breakfast starter pack (milk, bread, butter, eggs, coffee, tea, sugar) are part of the package.

We like to greet you and will give you as much guidance as you seek. Otherwise, we tend to let guests do their thing.

You'll need wheels. Most people prefer a car to a bike, as Ardattin is the nearest village (3km), with Tullow, Clonegal, Bunclody and Carlow offering a huge range of shopping, restaurants and other attractions within a 10-20 km radius. We are near the River Slaney with 3km of river beat and woodland for our guests to explore. Fishing (trout and sometimes salmon) is popular on the Slaney, from March-August - please enquire. Riding, golf (Mount Wolseley), micro-brewery, haunted castles (Huntington, Shankill), award-winning gardens (Altamont, Hardymount), and kayaking (via a local outdoor adventure company) provide a surprisingly rich and diverse set of activities for our guests - though many opt to curl up with a book and a cup of tea and enjoy the peace and quiet!

Guest access

You've got the house to yourself. There is lots of outdoor space. Guests have enjoyed picnics on the lawn, with lovely views of rolling hills and the Blackstairs mountains. Enjoy woodland and river walks along the River Slaney. Note that the walking can be rough in summer as growth is rampant!

Interaction with guests

We live a couple of km down the road and will be there if you need us. Usually our guests are there to have their headspace and tend to be great self-caterers.

Other things to note

We discount our rent rate generously for weekly and monthly stays, but utilities are not included for those longer stays. Note that electricity can vary from €8 to €20+ for a week, and oil for the central heating is measured and charged separately. There is a timer for the heating, but nonetheless the cost of oil means that heating can double the total utilities charge.
We ask that all recyclable items are washed.
The utility room contains the washing machine and dryer. This separate room is shared with the residents of the adjacent house, who can access it from outside, so your privacy is maintained.

Met by Tom, found the place no problem -- but it is out of the way! The lodge is spacious and very quiet. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

The house is exactly as described. The shower pressure is great and the water plenty hot. The surrounding is quiet and beautiful. The location is pretty off the beaten path, so a car is a must. We stayed during storm Opehlia and Pam was very helpful in making sure we were alright and well taken care of.

Pam met us on arrival with a bunch of hand picked flowers. The cottage was cosy, the heating and lights had been left on for us and we felt very welcome. Lovely comfy beds and pretty view. Out of the way yet homely...

Response from Pam:
Maria was unhappy from the moment she arrived and found herself in a rural location (so her son explained to me), even though I had pointed that out on my very first reply to her and we are visible on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps. She said absolutely nothing to me about any of her concerns during her week-long stay with her family, and has not paid for her utility usage which was generously discounted to account for the owner of the house using the shared washer and dryer in the shared utility room (adjacent to the private house). In preparation for her family's arrival, I scrubbed the place down as I always do, hoovering behind sofas and under cushions, cleaning out kitchen cupboards, dusting, washing walls, scrubbing showers, baths, loos, making beds, etc. I am thorough. Her "1" rating on cleanliness is unjustified, and ridiculous. This is a 3-bed, 2.5 bath, full-kitchen house that was well cleaned. The furniture is not fresh from IKEA but is in good condition. The parking area is not paved - it is pebbled, as are most country drives. The rural road was recently resurfaced by the county council so is in good condition - but does Maria expect me to have control over the road? Basic cooking needs (olive oil, herbs, spices, s&p, milk, bread, butter, eggs, fruit, baking goods like flour, sugar, baking powder, and a selection of tea and coffee), and a bouquet of fresh flowers from our garden were in place. Most importantly, Maria accuses me of breaching her privacy. It is my practice to have a friendly, good-faith relationship with guests in our home, and I respect their privacy as I would want mine respected as and Airbnb guest. The Lodge UTILITY ROOM is shared, but nobody went into her house. I have already told Maria this in a private message. I had recommended Maria as a guest, but perhaps that was a mistake. Maria might be happier in branded hotels where standardised bedrooms and hotel service, located in bigger cities, will help her to manage her expectations. If you and your family truly had such a dreadful experience, Maria, I am sorry for you. Thank you for booking with us. I wish you well.

Mom of four, yoga teacher, lover of walks in the woods. We try to communicate clearly what it's like living in our beautiful rural spot, and hope our guests love the place for what it is: an increasingly rare clean-air, clean-water (both cottages have their own well) place to potter around and relax. Writers, teachers, artists families and executives all seem to revel in the "slow holiday" aspect of the place.
