Overlooking Southwest Mountains, Chanticleer Cottage sits on 55 acres of farmland with restful country views but within minutes of Charlottesville, Gordonsville, Barboursville, Orange, Woodberry, Virginia's historic sites--Monticello, Montpelier, and Univ of Virginia--and many scenic wineries. Even with the pastoral setting, the Cottage is close to family as well as elegant, refined dining. The Cottage is a wonderful option for extended family visits, weddings, graduations, and winery touring.
The 1100-square-foot, fully furnished cottage has high ceilings, a spacious dining and living area with gas fireplace, two and one-half bedrooms (an office or nursery), one and one-half baths, a full kitchen, washer and dryer, an outside balcony with mountain views, and a front deck overlooking a landscaped garden.
Please note that Chanticleer Cottage has stairs to a separate and private entrance, but it is attached to Chanticleer Farmhouse and could be considered an apartment. However, there is no passageway from the main house to the cottage. The cottage has a separate heat pump so that guests can set the thermostat to suit their personal preference.
The cottage has a cast-iron gas fireplace.
Chanticleer Cottage makes a terrific base for families to relax and "hang out" before and after football, basketball, and baseball games, graduations, spring garden tours or fall "leaf week" visits; for holiday country excursions such as winery tours; and for other special events such as wine festivals.
Interaction with guests
Walk the land at your leisure in surroundings reminiscent of the English countryside. At night the stars hang low and the sounds of cattle, peeper frogs, horses, doves, and owls complement the country quiet.
Other things to note
Ask about special one-night pricing for football or basketball games or special pricing for several days (but less than one week). Chanticleer Cottage can easily accommodate two couples or a family in addition to a couple or singles. Chanticleer Farm owners Charles and Janet are glad to provide suggestions for dining and itineraries for excursions. Charles is a consultant in the energy industry. Janet is a nationally published writer. Pets are allowed for an extra fee.
The first rule at Chanticleer is to relax, have fun and enjoy the spectacular setting and nearby attractions.
We expect guests to behave respectfully toward our home and neighbors, enjoying themselves in a responsible manner. No smoking at all inside. No pets. No big parties, please! But large family dinners are certainly fine. Just ask if you're not sure what's appropriate for the house and neighborhood and we'll be glad to let you know.
We get our water from a well that has low flow but adequate storage, so we ask guests to limit showers to two or three minutes and to stagger them if at all possible.
