Overlooking Southwest Mountains, Chanticleer Cottage sits on 55 acres of farmland with restful country views but within minutes of Charlottesville, Gordonsville, Barboursville, Orange, Woodberry, Virginia's historic sites--Monticello, Montpelier, and Univ of Virginia--and many scenic wineries. Even with the pastoral setting, the Cottage is close to family as well as elegant, refined dining. The Cottage is a wonderful option for extended family visits, weddings, graduations, and winery touring.

The space

The 1100-square-foot, fully furnished cottage has high ceilings, a spacious dining and living area with gas fireplace, two and one-half bedrooms (an office or nursery), one and one-half baths, a full kitchen, washer and dryer, an outside balcony with mountain views, and a front deck overlooking a landscaped garden.

Please note that Chanticleer Cottage has stairs to a separate and private entrance, but it is attached to Chanticleer Farmhouse and could be considered an apartment. However, there is no passageway from the main house to the cottage. The cottage has a separate heat pump so that guests can set the thermostat to suit their personal preference.

The cottage has a cast-iron gas fireplace.

Guest access

Chanticleer Cottage makes a terrific base for families to relax and "hang out" before and after football, basketball, and baseball games, graduations, spring garden tours or fall "leaf week" visits; for holiday country excursions such as winery tours; and for other special events such as wine festivals.

Interaction with guests

Walk the land at your leisure in surroundings reminiscent of the English countryside. At night the stars hang low and the sounds of cattle, peeper frogs, horses, doves, and owls complement the country quiet.

Other things to note

Ask about special one-night pricing for football or basketball games or special pricing for several days (but less than one week). Chanticleer Cottage can easily accommodate two couples or a family in addition to a couple or singles. Chanticleer Farm owners Charles and Janet are glad to provide suggestions for dining and itineraries for excursions. Charles is a consultant in the energy industry. Janet is a nationally published writer. Pets are allowed for an extra fee.

House Rules
No smoking
Not suitable for pets

The first rule at Chanticleer is to relax, have fun and enjoy the spectacular setting and nearby attractions.
We expect guests to behave respectfully toward our home and neighbors, enjoying themselves in a responsible manner. No smoking at all inside. No pets. No big parties, please! But large family dinners are certainly fine. Just ask if you're not sure what's appropriate for the house and neighborhood and we'll be glad to let you know.
We get our water from a well that has low flow but adequate storage, so we ask guests to limit showers to two or three minutes and to stagger them if at all possible.

My stay at Chanticleer Cottage was enchanting! Tucked away down a lovely lane in the countryside, the cottage provided privacy for a peaceful retreat. The cottage is an easy drive to Charlottesville close to nearby attractions for enjoyable day trips. Charles and Janet were thoughtful and generous hosts --- the cottage was adorned with fresh bouquets of flowers and other extras creating an unforgettable getaway. Thank you!

This is a wonderful two bedroom apartment over the garage of a lovely country home. It has a separate entrance and is comfortably decorated with a large country style kitchen. There is a third small room with a crib and a Juliet balcony off the master which overlooks meadows, forest and hills. Note that cell signal (ATT) is weak as is the property's wifi. Also note that the unit does not have window treatments on the windows so if light while sleeping is an issue, this may not be the property for you. Charles and Janet are lovely hosts and were very understanding when traffic delayed our arrival. They have four energetic and fun dogs which they contain when guests are around but are willing to let you play with if you so desire. The area has lots of things to do and is within easy reach of Charlottesville, Montpelier and a few wineries. It's perfect for a base to explore this beautiful part of Virginia.

What a delightful escape from the city - a well loved annexe flat, full of personal touches and very well equipped. We enjoyed the rolling views around us and the peaceful surroundings. A great location for day trips to Luray and Monticello. Thank you for such a warm welcome, and especially for making the youngest member of our party feel so at home!

This is an outstanding home located on an outstanding property. I can't express enough what a lovely place this was to stay for our wedding weekend down in Gordonsville. The apartment is beautiful - and fully furnished with everything you could possibly want. The master bath was such a lovely place to get dressed and ready for wedding weekend activities. It really is a special spot. When we sat out on the deck for coffee in the morning, the valley was so quiet that we could actually hear the flapping of the vultures wings - that were easily a third of a mile away. It was fabulous. Not to mention the location for seeing all of the farming and rich history of the region. Charles is a wonderful host - made our check in and out very easy, and was a great communicator. You won't regret staying here.
