Faces South with magnificent views over the valley from the private garden. Just 15 minutes from Mont Dore ski station in winter with superb walking, cycling and swimming in the local Plan d'eau in the summer. Perfect for family holiday holidays

The space

Although little known to Brits and Americans, the Auvergne in the Massif Central has long been popular with the French. In the winter there is downhill skiing at the nearby resorts of Le Mont Dore and Superbesse. Plus plenty of cross country skiing, snow-shoe walking and climbing.

In the summer there is great walking, horse riding, road cycling (the Tour de France went almost past the house in 2011) and mountain biking plus swimming in the lakes or at the superb new swimming pool in La Bourboule, There are also lots of sites to see and special events. And there's also a great golf course at nearby Le Mont Dore.

Throughout the year the food is great and includes local specialities such as Truffade and Potée.

Our house is in 'Le Bourg' the central part of the village, a collection of beautiful old Auvergnian houses with roofs of stone or the traditional oval shaped slates arranged around the village church. However because it's on the edge of the Bourg it's extremely quiet and well away from the road. It is at an altitude of just over 1000 metres and has fantastic views, from the very sunny south-facing front garden, across the valley.

The house has been completely refurbished and tastefully furnished with good pictures, nice old furniture and solid oak floors, staircase and doors. Downstairs there is a very spacious kitchen/diner with French windows giving out onto the sunny front garden. There's also a sitting rom (with 100cm flat-screen TV, DVD player and wifi), a double bedroom and a ground floor bathroom with a walk in shower. On the first floor is the large ensuite master bedroom, a family bathroom and two other double bedrooms including one with access to a balcony and steps down to the back garden. On the third floor are two charming bedrooms under the eaves together with a toilet and wash-basin.

The well equipped kitchen has a 6 burner hob, a large fridge freezer, a second fridge, coffee maker, kettle, toaster etc.

7 of us motorcyclists just stayed in Ben's House. We didn't encounter any particular issues. As planned with Ben's contact on site, the linen was deposited in all the rooms and the lady agreed to do a bit of shopping for us beforehand as it s not easy to bring things back on motorcycles. Everything was left for us when we arrived. The house is big and ideal for a group of people. The weather was dreadful but the house is easily heated. It has a lovely log burner in the kitchen too. The house was clean and whilst the mattresses (Ikea mostly) are not of very good quality, they are fine for those without back problems. I was the only one suffering. Parking the bikes however in the muddy alleyway itself on a very steep hill is not ideal particularly when it pours down with rain everyday. But that s a minor inconvenience. The local restaurant was closed although we were in May/June but we found refuge at the lovely Cellier Muratois which is a delicatesse/souvenirs shop where the delightful lady also does lunches and dinners with local specialities. Absolutely lovely! you must book for dinner.

Response from Ben:
Malheureusement, le tarif chargé était incorrecte. Parce qu'il était moins de la moitié du taux correct, nous avons dû annuler la réservation.

Nice houses with lots of space and nearby restaurants and shops (though mostly shut in September), lovely countryside and mountains nearby. Weather unreliable in mid-late September.

We had a great time in a beautiful house. We encounters a few issues but Ben and his friend in Murat were there to help us.
