A traditional stoneground flour mill attached to a millpond (glimpse the kingfisher, a sudden flash of glistening blue!), we are a stone’s throw from the hilltop town of Shaftesbury famed for Gold Hill and the real home of that Hovis ad! Sleep in a calm and airy west-facing double room, with comfy king size bed. Enjoy invigorating walks over Fontmell Down, follow secluded lanes and ancient tracks, explore prehistoric sites and timeless villages or head to the spectacular Dorset coast.
My husband's family have been milling since 1832 and his father started out on his own at Cann Mills in 1947. Cann Mills was recorded in the Domesday Book and one of five mills within a mile on the River Sturkel, a tributary to the River Stour. We produce organic stoneground flour using French Burr millstones primarily driven by a late 19th Century iron waterwheel.
The room is a pretty and spacious double with two large windows, from which to enjoy beautiful sunsets. The bed is an 'extremely' comfy (we've been told by guests!) king. An arm chair, small bookcase and a basin (with soap and hand towel) complete the room. There is also a small kettle for you to make yourselves tea & coffee.
Breakfast is eaten in our dining room, please let me know the night before what time you would like to eat (between 7 and 9am). We lay out a breakfast of muesli, stewed fruit, yoghurt, juice, a variety of toasted artisan breads (using our stoneground flour!), croissants, tea and freshly brewed coffee. During term time I have to nip out on the school run at 8:20am, and can leave you a 'help yourself' breakfast unless you are happy to wait until 9am.
** CHECK IN is from 3pm and CHECK OUT is 10am **
Please let me know what time you plan to arrive as I often have to nip out for school pickup, after school clubs etc. If you are running late please could you keep me updated via text or through Airbnb so we can be here to welcome you.
This is an old house and she can be a little unpredictable at times, if something isn't working properly please shout out and we can give her a nudge! Please don't wait until you get home as we want you to have a lovely stay.
In addition ...
We can squeeze a single trundle bed into this bedroom. Even if there are 3 people in the room an additional £20 will be charged, this covers laundry, use of facilities and breakfast.
Panary, across the mill yard, runs a selection of 1, 2 or 3 day craft baking courses.
Please do contact us with any questions...
You have access to a pretty bathroom with bath and plenty of hot water and bubbles, that has the best millpond views in the house! We have our own bathroom which the family uses but the occasional person might nip in to use the loo. There is no shower in this bathroom, however there is a shower room & loo across the mill yard ~ 15m from the back door.
We have an outside kennel for quiet dogs, ideal for people on local shoots looking for a dog friendly place to stay. We ask that they do not come inside. Our property opens out onto fields, so there is plenty of space to exercise them.
Interaction with guests
We will make you welcome and help with questions about where to eat, shop and guide you on local walks, otherwise we will respect your privacy. This is a working house, so please take us as you find us!
Other things to note
It is not always possible to answer your query immediately so please bear with me and I will always get back to you as soon as I can.
Please remember to take your shoes off in our home.
Accidents sometimes happen and we do understand that. If you have a spill please let us know as soon as possible and we can sort it out for you, change bedding etc. Please don't use towels to clear up spillages.
We are a non smoking house (also no smoking in the vicinity of the mill please) and ask that you leave your boots/shoes either in our Bootroom or at the front door before going upstairs.
I am a Mum/Graphic Designer (and yogi) married to Mike, a fifth generation flour miller. Whilst he has lived here all his life, I have spent much of my adult life living overseas but am happily back in Dorset. We have Pip the cat and Blackberry the tortoise, sheep, chickens and some gorgeous Hereford cattle who come and stay for summer grazing. We're not an upmarket b&b, but a happy, clean and lived in family household who are warm and welcoming. Travel, walking, sailing and the provenance of good food, are just some of our passions and we feel blessed to be able to return to this glorious corner of Dorset we call home.
