A lovingly restored traditional Alpujarran village house in Barranco Ferrer (in the municipality of Rubite), with access to private pool and hot tub, and only 7km from the lovely beaches of the Costa Tropical. Best of both worlds from only €32 per night!

The space

Simply but tastefully furnished, Casa Lola has been a favourite with our guests for years. Downstairs there is a good sized-kitchen and bathroom, a small sitting room and dining room, and a small double bedroom.

Upstairs is the main twin-bedded room and a lovely outdoor terrace including a BBQ, pictured above.

Casa Lola is ideal for two or three people, but a bit of a squash for four, because the double downstairs is cozy!

Bed linen and indoor towels are provided by us, but please bring your own outdoor towels for use at the pool/hot tub and beach.

FULL WIFI INTERNET ACCESS IS INCLUDED

Car Hire is essential, because we are 7km from the stunning beaches of Spain's Costa Tropical, in a remote and quiet little village, (up a steep mountain track) BUT only 10 minutes away from the coastal holiday action.

However, this is the real rural Spain, no local car hire or moped/scooter hire companies, and no local buses.

This is what makes the village of Ferrer unique. Come and share it with us!

Guest access

You will have full access to our swimming pool and hot tub. Both are shared with our other property.

Interaction with guests

Mike and Lucy live in the village and are always on hand to offer help or advice if needed.

Other things to note

FREE WIFI

Here in rural Andalucia we have FREE WIFI installed for your convenience and enjoyment. However, our speeds are relatively slow at 3mb maximum.
The code you will require is written on a label on the router.
HOWEVER, certain new i-phones and similar devices will NOT pick up the signal as the speed is under 4mb, and they will only operate at speeds of 4mb or more. You may have to re-set your device.
If the code on the label does not work on your device, please tell us immediately (although not at 10pm!) and we will try and help you resolve the issue.

Many thanks!
Mike and Lucy

We had a very pleasant stay in Casa Lola. Ali, Mike & Lucy were friendly and welcoming. Ali came to meet us and was always available to answer questions. The village is charming, peaceful and perfect for a relaxing break. The house is bright and airy and we enjoyed a few delicious BBQ's on the terrace. Thank you for having us to stay.

Casa Lola is a very nice and unique little place. We loved the location, very secluded in a small friendly village in the mountains. Yet its still close to the coast. The drive up there is a bit bumpy (the steep and narrow dirt road might not be for everyone) but well worth the effort. Communication with mike before arrival was easy and efficient, during our stay Ed showed us around. Ed is a great guy, very friendly, helpful and attentive. There are a few things we think could be improved to make the place more comfortable. The mattresses on the small beds were a bit worn out (on the big bed the mattress was good). The lounge area only has a small couch, hardly big enough for 2 people, so not enough space to sit with 3 people. The WiFi didn't work during our stay. We could use the WiFi from another house outside or the mobile internet on the roof. For the price you pay the place is definitely good value. We had a great stay!

Thank you Peter for your kind comments. I must correct you on one point though, the steep and narrow road is not dirt, it was paved two years ago. The only part which is still dirt is the 300 metres of flat track next to the river at the bottom of our hill. I take on board your comments about the mattresses, every winter we review and upgrade something in the house, and the WIFI is being completely renewed and rewired next week. The mattresses will shortly follow. The lounge area is indeed quite small, as we state in our description, the house is perfect for 2, but a bit of a squash for 4. Unfortunately more guests seem to just go on the price, rather than reading the description fully first. And you are correct, it is GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY, particularly when you include the welcome food pack (fresh eggs, milk, juice, butter, jam, water, etc), the use of the swimming pool and hot tub,and not forgetting the ever-present, helpful and attentive Ed. Most Airbnb properties in which I have stayed around the world, I have never ever met the host, let alone had an Ed on hand 24/7 !!

We really wanted to like Casa Lola but unfortunately whatever was charming about it is long gone. The pictures look much better than the property itself, which is run down and needs a lot of attention. There was some water damage which left holes in the ceiling as well as a mouldy smell downstairs. The kitchen appliances are ancient and the cooker does not seem safe with only one burner working properly. The bathroom looks dirty with mould in-between tiles. The host's attitude made us feel unwelcome at best. We understand that his real passion is his boat and that's where he spends most of his time but he runs property rental business as well and it would be nice if he paid a bit more attention to it as well. All the communication with him was done via WattsApp or AirBnb. We were aware of 'the slow, rural WiFi service' but our router was not working at all and when we told Mike about it 2 days after the arrival he dismissed us at first repeating the same story about 'rural service'. He then sent Ed round to have a look at it - BTW Ed is a real gem - and at that time we discovered he was the one taking care of the place. The router was then replaced the next day and worked fine, with 'slow, rural service.' I don't know if we are too demanding but we felt not welcomed and decided to book another place and left 4 days before the planned departure date. Barranco Ferrer is a gorgeous place but if you're looking for a real Spanish experience look elsewhere - there are only holiday homes and some British people living in the village permanently.

Thank you for your valuable feedback about Casa Lola. Whilst I take on board some of your comments about the property, it is advertised and priced as “simply but tastefully furnished”. You certainly seemed bowled over by its charm when I showed you round after your very delayed arrival. It is now nearing the end of the season, and it will be redecorated and refurbished accordingly as it is every winter. Meanwhile it is on sale at UNDER €26 a night, which is what you paid for it, a very modest amount for a 2-bedroomed house with access to our private pool and hot tub. You never mentioned the pool and hot tub, presumably then I can therefore assume that you were perfectly happy with them! (BTW, we have checked the cooker and all the 4 gas hobs and the electric oven are working fine, so I’m not sure what to make of that comment). I am, however, very concerned about your comments about my attitude being unwelcoming, in 16 years of living here and renting out my modest properties at modest prices, that is a first! Was it the fact that I drove down the mountain for 7km to meet and greet you after your flight was badly delayed, showed you around the house and pool and hot tub personally, answered all your written questions in a polite and timely manner prior to your arrival, popped over on your second night to rescue you after you had mysteriously locked yourselves out on your roof terrace, and then went out and bought and installed a new router for you when your internet connection refused to work? Please DO let me know at which point, exactly, you felt I was unwelcoming! When I showed you around the village after your arrival, I pointed out exactly where Ed, Lucy and myself live (20 metres from Casa Lola!), and invited you to knock on the office door, or pop round to the main door anytime you needed anything. Here we work as a team, and so if I am down working on the boat, then, yes, Ed will be the one who responds to guest’s requests (or Lucy). As far as I am aware, you didn’t ever do that, preferring instead to communicate by (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN). When you messaged me to say you were leaving early, I immediately contacted Ed who popped round to see you within ten minutes to find out if there was a problem, and apparently you told him that everything was fine and that having seen everything you wanted to in the area, you had decided to go and stay near Malaga for a few nights. What is perfectly clear to me is that prior to booking to stay in our village and at Casa Lola you didn’t properly read the full description on the Airbnb pages, and so both the house and the village didn’t measure up to your perceived expectations of a real Spanish experience.

This is a lovely, friendly, well-equipped house in a spectacular setting that we used a base to visit all sorts of wonderful places and enjoyed spending time in too. We also really enjoyed the pool and hot tub after the heat of the day. Nerves of steel needed for the track up to the house, but it's worth it :)

We moved to Spain in 2001, to this beautiful and sunny part of Andalucia. We live in a stunningly rebuilt white mountain village, El Ferrer, just 10 minutes from the sparkling, warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean, and some of the best, emptiest beaches in Southern Spain. We are also just one hour from the amazing city of Granada, and also just one hour from the major Spanish cities of Malaga and Almeria.
