We are Located on the southeast shore of the Big Island of Hawaii. As a completely separate guest home on nearly 3 acres of an ocean front parcel, this very private rental is nestled in a lush tropical garden and has all the charm of real Hawaii. Presently, active lava is flowing from Kilauea volcano. Public viewing is located about 2 miles from the cottage. This viewing is a once-in- a lifetime opportunity for residents and visitors.

The space

This all cedar rustic cottage provides homey comfort in a relaxed rural area away from the usual tourist scene yet with easy accessibility to other attractions. A private driveway with covered carport, a sunny yard and an abundance of flowers and fruit trees add to the convenience and pleasure of staying in your own piece of paradise. In the 2009 Summer Edition of 'Outside Magazine', Peaceful Cove Cottage was rated one of the top 50 best places in the country to 'get away from it all'.

Guest access

You may chose to relax on the lanai in some of the best weather Hawaii has to offer; or let the soothing sound of ocean waves invite you to meander along your own private nature trail through a pristine wooded area rich in native flora. A minute's walk brings you to the beautiful ocean and peaceful cove. Blue skies, sparkling water and a fascinating coastline lie before you. Walk right along the ocean easily for miles on an old lava field and discover volcanic black sand and interesting lava formations,(lower lava trail). Hunt for shells and witness spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Or take the 'upper lava trail' which is a bit more rugged but walkable on the dramatic cliffs with sea spray propelling high into the air and a 360' view taking in the coastline and mountain. Also awaiting you at this spot we have named 'turtle bay' is the privileged chance to watch sea turtles riding the waves and/or diving for food The shoreline is rocky and the ocean not suitable for swimming but these walks are a one-of-a-kind exploration. Swimming and snorkeling are accessed in nearby tide pools or warm ponds within a short drive. Also a small black sand beach where you may enter the water is within a short drive.
The Volcano National Park is a popular day trip as are many other sights and activities within a 15 mile radius of the cottage.

Interaction with guests

A family member or I generally will meet you when you arrive or shorty after. We will direct you to our wonderful farmers markets, restaurants and answer any other questions you may have. Then we will give you your privacy and allow you to explore and enjoy yourselves. However, If you need us we are only a call away.

My husband and I had an amazing 11 night honeymoon at the Peaceful Cove Cottage. This place is an absolute gem if you're looking to be away from it all in paradise. The cottage is secluded and quiet, (except for the frogs at night which you get used to real quick) and a great place to relax. If you're looking to explore and do a lot of traditional Hawaiian tourist activities, be prepared to drive a bit. We didn't mind because the location is so perfect and the scenery is gorgeous and there's a lot to do nearby if you're looking to explore. Cheryl and her husband were very kind and personable and completely left us to our privacy but we knew they were available if we needed anything. 100% would recommend and hope to stay again if they're still renting it out next time we can get to the island. Mahalo Cheryl!!!

Reviews/photos can't quite convey the unique experience of staying in this laid-back coastal cottage surrounded by greenery, birds, and butterflies. Rustic and relaxed, the property is secluded and lush, yet it's just a 3-minute drive to Uncle Robert's for basic groceries (plus beer/wine) and an easy jaunt up 137 through tree tunnels to various beaches and coves. Also, it's less than 15 minutes to Pahoa, which has two good grocery stores and several restaurants. (And if you stay on a Wednesday, don't miss the communal party at Uncle Robert's, wow.) Mismatched dishes and original art enhance this easy-going, well-stocked getaway, which has everything from beach towels to bug spray. We got a kick out of the bright green geckos and loved feeding the saffron finches, cardinals, and doves. Also, the wooded path to the ocean is magical! Like something out of a fairy tale, and then you emerge to crashing surf against dramatic lava rocks. Just stunning. Communication with Cheryl was great; she is a lovely, kind, trusting person and we are grateful to her for offering this cozy rental to visitors like us. Hard to believe it's just about 30 miles from Hilo. If you're lucky, Cheryl's cat Leo will stop by when you're hanging out on the lanai.

We are very thankful to Cheryl for her hospitality and a few pleasant days we spent at charming place of Peaceful Cove Cottage. Cheryl is a very hospitable and welcoming host and responds to queries promptly. Her booklet on activities was also helpful. The place itself is beautiful. Staying at the Peaceful Cove Cottage gave us the feeling that we owned our own private piece of jungles. A short (few minutes) walk to the ocean allowed us to enjoy the beautiful sunrise. And this wilderness was combined with a well organized place and very homey comfort. Some of the main tourist attractions are in close proximity. Natural hot tide pools (about 20 mins drive) provide for a really unique experience of swimming and snorkeling. The east entrance to the Lava Viewing Area with hikes or bicycle rides is around the corner. Additionally while the place feels very private, just a three minutes drive allows you to enjoy the local spirit of Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmers Market on Wednesday's and Saturday's nights at Kalapana. In sum our stay at Peaceful Cove Cottage was amazing and we cannot wait to come back soon! (Thank you, Cheryl!)

Our stay at this cottage was perfect! We love this cottage and its beautiful garden. The kids went every day by themselves from the garden to the ocean. What a freedom! Communication with Cheryl was quick. If you don't like geckos you shouldn't go there, because there are many beautiful ones. They keep mosquitos etc. away! We would certainly recommend this cottage to others.

Living in the middle of a gorgeous garden listening to the surf pound on lava was a treasure. We sat on the lanai in the mornings and evenings and listened to birds singing in the morning and frogs croaking at night, with the constant soft sound of the surf in the background. It was lovely to visit to the ocean and walk along the lava flow and watch the waves roll in. We didn't want to leave and would go back in an instant! The cottage is close to the best snorkeling I have ever done in the islands and Cheryl has directions on how to get there. Thank you, Cheryl, for being such a lovely host and helping make our last few days on the island glorious!

Wow! Where to start...Cheryl's Peaceful Cove Cottage is even better then the photos she has posted! Everywhere you look there is another beautiful surprise, from the healthy tropical flowers, papaya trees and the secret path through the jungle to the ocean! Wow, what a surprise to come out of this tropical vine covered jungle onto the stark black lava that came along the coast in the 90's....about twenty feet ahead is the wild ocean. The color of the water and waves was turquoise! So lovely....we would take some beach chairs and sit on the lava watching the ocean. You can't go in the water because it's much too rough and there isn't any beach, just cliffs of lava, but it was spectacular to see and enjoy the sound of the crashing waves. Cheryl and her husband live on the property with a gorgeous view of the ocean. You can't see their house from the Cottage but Cheryl is available if you need anything. She couldn't have been nicer and knows everything about the island, having lived there over 40 years. We loved the open feel of the cottage and the fully stocked kitchen. We spent most of our time on the big deck overlooking the beautiful trees and plants. Each morning we would get up and have our coffee outside enjoying the scenery and the birds, which we would feed every morning! There are two bird feeders and Cheryl has lots of birdseed. We saw cardinals, doves, saffron finches and two black chickens on the ground cleaning up what fell out of the feeders. There was a lovely rain most mornings, and usually sunshine after that. Just a short drive (or walk) down the street is a place you won't find anywhere else...Uncle Awa's Bar, better know as just "Uncle Roberts". It is so many things rolled into one that it's hard to describe. The acreage is owned by the family of Uncle Robert, who died a couple years ago. They are Hawaiians and claim their property and all the new lava land in front of it as belonging to the Kingdom of Hawaii. I think because of that, they do whatever they want! There is an outdoor bar, 2 food concessions and a bookstore under a big metal roof that is so awesome when it rains, that is open daily....on Wednesday nights starting at 5:30pm you will be in for a wild time! There is a great band consisting mostly of people from Uncle Roberts family plus a few haoles...these guys are big ponytailed Hawaiians that play tiny ukuleles, as well as other instruments! There is an area to dance, which is usually started by lots of little dancing children....some doing the hula and others just rocking out. The place fills with people from all over the island. There are about 20 food stands that have wonderful fresh local food and many local artists set up stands there from jewelry, carvings, leather work to clothes. Everyone is so friendly...

Cheryl User ProfileCheryl is a superhost.

We transplanted to Hawaii from the mainland in 1975 and have made this incredible island our home ever since. Acquiring this lovely 3 acre ocean front property in 1986 while it was in it's original pristine state, gave us the opportunity to carefully and tenderly sculpt the environment to maintain the natural integrity of the land. We built 2 homes on the property, one where my family and I live full time and the other as a guest cottage. The homes are separated by lush vegetation with separate driveways and cannot be seen or heard from one another yet we are close enough to be available to our guests at any time. The result is a unique tropical landscape where we offer our guests a glimpse of life in true old Hawaii.
I enjoy meeting the people from all over the world who come to share this incredible place with us and I love to garden and putter around in the yard. I'm always fond of describing the many botanical wonders growing around me.
Another favorite past time is to relax on the lanai by myself or with friends and try to capture this exquisite scenery on canvas. Or to take the short stroll from the cottage on our private trail to the sparkling ocean and walk along the rugged shoreline and be mesmerized by the ever changing colors in the sky, the waves and the lava fields.

The ocean in front of the cottage area is not suitable for swimming but the walk along the coast is like no other- waves crash on rugged cliffs and sea turtles swim in the turquoise depths. There may even be an opportunity from a safe distance to view new lava cascading into the sea or flowing down the cliff- a spectacular sight.

I welcome you to visit Peaceful Cove Cottage in Kalapana and join us in this magical place of aloha.
