The space

Welcome to the other Kells, in the county of Kilkenny; our cottage is located opposite the King's river in the historical village of Kells. This lovingly restored thatch-roofed cottage is nestled in an area of great natural beauty and unique archaeological heritage. Originally built in the late 18th century by a local entrepreneurial family, the Mill Cottage was the Mullins family ancestral home. Today the charming cottage has been sympathetically refurbished and restored to recreate old world charm, with a modern twist. The house is surrounded by lovely gardens nurtured by the previous and present owners and resulting in a peaceful and visually stunning landscape.

The Mill Cottage has a warm and homely atmosphere from the moment you step inside. The accommodation offers two beautifully furnished and decorated bedrooms (one double, one twin), bathroom with waterfall shower, a large cosy living room with original open fireplace and wood burning stove, and a modern kitchen with all mod cons (electric oven & hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, etc.). A hall leads out to the gardens, with steps leading up to a small apple orchard from which are views of the surrounding countryside, mills, church spires and the nearby historic Augustinian Priory. Situated in an idyllic rural location, the Mill Cottage is for someone looking for something special and unique.

Camping within the gardens is available and great fun!!, You can email me for more information.

Kells is a beautiful rural Irish village surrounded by rolling fields leading down to the lively Kings River. With numerous historic buildings, the music and craic in local pubs, as well as local shops and other amenities, Kells is a pleasant place to take a break and relax as well as visiting nearby places of interest, such as Kilkenny, Thomastown, Graiguenamanagh and Inistioge. Walking in and around Kells village is peaceful and full of discoveries. A 12th century Augustinian Priory adjacent to the Mill Cottage is one the most magnificent medieval monuments in Ireland. Kilree, an old religious site with an impressive round tower, high cross and ancient church, is a pleasant 1.5km walk from the village centre. There are also a number of activity trails throughout the county and can be found by searching local websites.

Located just 13km from Thomastown and Kilkenny city, the Mill Cottage is within easy reach of amenities such as restaurants, pubs, shopping, and transport, including train stations in both Thomastown and Kilkenny city. The county also boasts outdoor activities such as golfing in the nearby Mount Juliet Hotel grounds, scenic fishing spots along Kings River and River Nore, and various other attractions (Kilkenny Castle, Black Abbey, Jerpoint Abbey and Dunmore Caves). The newly built motorway from Dublin is 3km from Kells Village which is ideal for traveling throughout the entire sunny southeast of Ireland.

Kilkenny: The mediaeval capital of Ireland as well as home to Ireland’s crafts industries and famous festivals – Rhythm and Roots Weekend (May bank holiday weekend), the Cats Laughs Festival (June bank holiday weekend), Thomastown Traditional Irish Music weekend (August bank holiday weekend), Kilkenny Arts Festival (10th Aug – 19th).

Some of Ireland’s finest studio workshops are located in the scenic valley of the River Nore. The Craft Trail is perhaps the best way to sample each artist and their workshops, which are easily found in Kilkenny city, Bennettsbridge, Thomastown and Inistioge. Information on The Craft Trail is available at the cottage.

Internet access is available however due to our rural location it may not be as quick as you may find in main cities & towns

The cottage was charming. Everything is as it seems from the photos- a storybook exterior and nicely furnished interior with plenty of room and a view of the wonderful garden flowers from every window. We were only two adults, but the cottage could easily accommodate a family of four or 3-4 adults. As others have noted, the doorways are low- a charming reminder of the age of the cottage, but something to consider for someone who is tall. We enjoyed the short walk along the river to Kells Priory and used the cottage as a base to visit sights in Inistioge (Woodstock Gardens, School House Cafe and a walk along the Nore River) and Thomastown ( Jerpoint Abbey and Kilfane Glen) and took a day trip to the Hook Peninsula. We did not get a chance to meet Jadzia, but Dave met us on arrival and walked us through the cottage. We found the cottage clean, tidy, and well-equipped, with homey touches throughout. We would definitely recommend the cottage to others traveling in the area.

This house is amazing! Dave was tremendous in pointing out the attractions, restaurants, and pubs in the local area. The village Kells looks as though it was torn from the screen play of a fairytale! Kells priory is a 10 minute walk at most...I could go on and on. We will be back in the future Dave, thank you once again.

This is a gorgeous cottage in a lovely setting, a few minutes walk from a ruined abbey and a quick drive from the lively town of Kilkenny. Each inch of the three-hundred year old cottage is thoughtfully and creatively decorated, and the back garden, from which you can glimpse the ruins, is exquisite. Lots to see and do in the area and the hosts, one of whom is a musician, give wonderful advice. Our whole family will treasure the memories from our stay.

Jadzia and Dave are lovely and lively hosts and staying in their thatched roof cottage really feels like living in a fairy tale. The gardens in back are beautiful and peaceful, our daughter LOVED visiting the hens each day, and Kells is a cute tiny village with a shop and cozy pub but near enough to Kilkenny that we spent full days in town. By far the highlight was walking along the river to Kells Priory though- we did it twice it was so beautiful and peaceful. One note: we are rather short and whimsical, but I could see some tall Midwesterners or type-A folks getting frustrated by elements of a 300-year-old cottage, eg bumping their heads on the low door frames or trying to get a nice temp out of the either very hot or not shower. But for us, it was an absolute delight!

"The Enchanting Mill Cottage" is perfectly named -- the cottage itself and the surrounding village is honestly like stepping into a fairy tale. The house and gardens are as beautiful -- if not more so -- as in the pictures, and were a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. In June, the gardens and surrounding fields and forests were incredibly gorgeous and were great for going on long, relaxing walks. The cottage is also very comfortable inside. Despite being there for an unusually hot couple of days, inside the house was very cool. Even though it technically doesn't have air conditioning, the amazing thick walls and thatched roof made it feel like it did! We're told it has a similarly amazing effect keeping the place warm inside during the winter. Dave and Jadzia were extremely considerate and really went out of their way to make sure our stay was as good as it could be. We were traveling to Kells from Dublin by train, and Dave was kind enough to pick us up at the station and give us a ride (otherwise, taxis are available though.) He also gave us a ride into Kilkenny one night, and during our stay made a point to introduce us to several interesting locals. While it certainly would be useful to have a car when you travel to Kells -- especially if you want to explore a lot of the surrounding area -- we did not have one and were perfectly happy for the few days we were there. There is a small (really small) village just a few minutes walk away with a couple of great pubs and a small grocery/convenience store. Kells Priory, a historic landmark that's nice to walk around and explore, is also very close by. Another small village is about a 35-45 walk away and taxis are available if you want to travel into the bigger town of Kilkenny. All in all, if you're looking at these pictures and daydreaming about spending some time in this storybook cottage, definitely do it!!
