Each yurt is bright and spacious at 20ft (6m) diameter, interiors are luxuriously furnished and beds have heavy winter duvets, crisp white bed linen, fluffed pillows and cosy Donegal woollen blankets. With your warm stove burning, lie in bed staring up at the stars through your clear skydome within the privacy of your insulated yurt walls. Guests can use the Lodge amenity building which offers a fully-equipped kitchen, hot showers, toilets and big lounge area with fireplace and panoramic views.

The space
A simple yet magical dwelling sleeping in a yurt evokes a sense of otherworldliness. Originally the homes of the nomads of Central Asia the type of yurt here at Lough Mardal Lodge has been adapted for today and has been chosen for its high-tech insulation, warmth and durability which is required for the slightly temperamental weather on the west coast of Ireland! The yurts are very spacious at 20ft (6m) diameter and luxuriously furnished, they have two windows and a dome skylight letting in plenty of natural light. With your warm stove burning, lie in bed staring up at the stars through your clear skydome within the privacy of your insulated yurt walls. Set in a stunning, wild location the yurts are utterly immersed in nature with beautiful views, and the sun very obligingly sets outside the window. Each yurt comes with a Superking bed as standard. Extra beds for children can be provided on request, subject to availability, at additional charge. Guests can avail of the amenities in the communal Lodge which offers a fully-equipped kitchen, hot showers, toilets and large and striking lounge area with spiralling beams overhead and panoramic views of lake, forestry and mountains.

Guest access
Guests have exclusive use of their yurt as well as the communal Lodge amenity building which offers a fully equipped kitchen, hot showers, flushing toilets and a beautiful and warm hang-out space overlooking Lough Mardal and the surrounding forestry. Guests are also welcome to explore and enjoy the surrounding 90 acres of land. There are some beautiful walks or hikes, you can take-in the panoramic views from the hilltop looking down on the 2 lakes, Donegal Bay and the Dartry, Slieve League and Bluestack mountain ranges in the distance. Guests can also go wild swimming or do a spot of fishing in the lake.

Other things to note
COVID 19: We are in the unique position of being able to offer accommodation where guests can practice very good social distancing. We only accommodate a small number of guests each night and our yurts are all separated and well-spaced from each other in the great outdoors. The Lodge is a communal building but at 400sqm is very large and allows plenty of space for guests to circulate and at the same time avoid close contact with others; every room within the building has multiple entry and exit points, the showers in the Lodge are wet rooms, fully contained, no shared changing-rooms and there is direct access to the loos and showers from outside, without having to pass through common areas. Each yurt has hand sanitisers, and guests have their own dedicated kitchen untensils, plates, cups, bowls, etc for the duration of their stay. A 'Self-Check In' policy is also in place to minimise social interaction (unfortunately!). We wish to offer reassurance that all measures including continual deep cleans and adjustments are being taken to protect our guests while continuing to offer a high quality experience. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO NOTE:There is no electricity in the yurt. Light is by rechargeable lantern and candles which are provided. We are trying to be plastic-free so ask guests not to bring plastic bottles on site. We provide a large glass bottle of water on arrival which you are welcome to refill for the duration of your stay with our clean tap water from our well. Wellingtons or good hiking boots are recommended if you intend going for any rambles on the site. We provide fresh linen and towels and toiletries. The yurt is well insulated with a wood-burning stove and hot water bottles and extra blankets are provided. And don't forget your swimsuit if you're up for for some wild swimming in the lake! Also, we have one pet-friendly yurt, please check availability of this yurt with us before booking if you wish to bring a pet.

Location

Bradlieve, Co. Donegal, Ireland

Set on the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland's most popular touring route, Lough Mardal is accessibly remote. You have all the peaceful benefits of being in the middle of nowhere yet in fact you are just 15 minutes to Donegal Town or Ballyshannon, the oldest town in Ireland. Well-known surf spots Bundoran and Mullaghmore are also within short distance. The nearest pub and shop is a 10 minute drive. There are two enormous sandy beaches within 15 minutes drive. There is plenty of hill walking and cycle trails including the Bluestack Way.

Having lived in the east coast of Ireland we did the opposite to what most sensible couples do when they are expecting a baby. We packed in our long-term, well-paid stable jobs and moved west to fullfill a pipedream of living a simpler, slower life, raising our young twin girls in the countryside, somewhere beautiful, growing our own vegetables and keeping a few animals...and somehow make a living. We settled in Lough Mardal in Donegal. A 90-acre site of wild, unspoiled natural beauty - we fell in love instantly. Setting up a small glamping lodge here became the working plan. Located on the Wild Atlantic Way coastline, accessibly remote, with two lakes and stunning landscape - we knew anyone who visited wouldn't be able to help falling in love with it like we did. We put most of our possessions in storage and moved here in 2015, moving into a yurt - with no running water or electricity - with our 6-month old twins. We set to work on a vegetable garden, compost loos, built a chicken tractor and bought a few chickens, in time upgraded our residence to a wooden cabin (such luxury) and got hooked up to electricity and then running water (wow!), accumulated a dog and 5 donkeys, restored a ruined stone cottage, planted two woodlands and did a lot of land prepping...and during all this time jumped a lot of hurdles to secure grant funding to help build our eco glamping business. Building is now well underway and we aim to be open properly by Summer 2019. We have enjoyed the privilege of living the 'Good Life' here for the last few years in our private paradise, getting back to nature, disconnecting from the noise of the modern world and re-appreciating the simple things in life. We now look forward to sharing this wonderful place with you and offering you a chance to do the same. Clare & Marcus

During your stay
We are a family with two young children and are quite busy running our new glamping business so do not have much time to be very sociable unfortunately but as we live and work on the land we will never be far away and would be delighted to show guests around or offer advice on things to do or places to see in the area.
