Cashelnagor Railway Station is a beautifully restored Station House and 'Waiting Room' on the now dismantled "Letterkenny & Burtonport Extension Line". Built in 1902 it was home to a long line of stationmasters and their families until the railway closed in 1947. The last family left the isolated railway station in 1954 and the property slowly fell into disrepair. We purchased the completely dilapidated building in 2017 and undertook a complete restoration.

The space
The building now houses two independent accommodations. The main house is where the station-master and his family once lived and the 'Waiting Room' (This Listing) is where travellers on the train waited before embarking on their journey.

This walls of this part of the building hold many secrets - where did the people who left this area end up! Did they use it to attend the 'Hiring Fairs' in east Donegal, were they emigrating to pastures new, or were they eloping to marry an unsuitable partner??

After the railway closed the waiting room was used as a store and then a cow byre, before it became completely derelict. During restoration we added a bedroom to the rear to create a self-contained apartment. The apartment now contains a spacious open plan living room/kitchen and an en-suite bedroom which contains a double bed and bunk bed.

We sourced furniture and finishing from all over the country to create a comfortable and traditional style home. The apartment has central heating throughout and small peat burning stove. We we have chosen not to install a TV so that visitors can enjoy the experience a true peace and quiet.

Prior to restoration the building had only half a roof, no windows, doors, floors or stairs and much of the plaster-work had disappeared. The building never had running water or electricity so one of our first jobs was to work with the utility companies to install these 'modern' amenities!

Guest access
Guests have access to the 'Waiting Room' apartment. The adjoining Station House is separate and is also available to rent on airbnb. Both units have their own entrance doors and share the parking and garden space.

Other things to note
The building experience a new lease of life in the early 1990's when it was used as the setting for the movie "The Railway Station Man". Staring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland the movie was based on a book written by Jennifer Johnson. However, the renovation was only temporary, all windows, doors, and roof were removed and the building once again stood lonely for almost another 30 years.

Gortahork, County Donegal, Ireland

Cashelnagor Railway Station is located in a rural area, but like all rural areas the local pub is just 2km away! Gortahork village which is on the 'Wild Atlantic Way' is just 5km and contains pubs, a large supermarket, hardware store and off-licence as well as a convenience store and hotel.
The area has a maze of quiet country roads where you can experience the beauty of Donegal up-close and personal.

My husband Gavin and I have traveled all over the world but still put Donegal top of the list of our travel experiences. We are constantly finding new places and hidden gems. We now have a couple of airb&b properties in Donegal and we hope our travel experiences help us to deliver what guests would expect from their holiday accommodation.
