We love our long view and the utter silence just a mile off the Parkway. The country road dead-ends another half-mile down, so traffic is rare. Lots of walkable paths and such. The large deck faces South so the morning will come to you. Evenings are fun to watch the dusk cover the Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain 25 miles across the way as the lights of Mt. Airy twinkle 1,800 feet below. Our very favorite time is when the clouds lay below us like a carpet with the sun above. Why leave?

The space
The view is stunning all seasons of the year, except when the fog rolls in. It does that sometimes, especially when it's cold. The native Americans called it "foggy gap", not Fancy Gap. Technically, it's not really fog, but clouds that don't lift off the 2,000 ridge over the Piedmont below....but it's still hard to see through it. We have a webcam so we can see what we can and can't see, and will share with guests so you know, too.

Guest access
You'll have high speed DSL internet...but no TV. You'll have a DVD player with a decent screen and most all the wires to connect with your laptop, if you'd like to stream stuff. We should note that you're also at the far reaches of the cell signal up here, especially if the fog rolls in (see above). They keep switching around the cell towers, but be aware. Again, you can use the high-speed internet for skype, if needed.

Other things to note
The water is from a deep well shared with neighbors, so in the winter we keep it off until you're nearly there. And we'll ask you to turn it off again when you leave, if it's really cold. All the fixtures are new and water crystal pure, but you're not downtown.

The parking is off the road, at the top of the road above the steps down to the cabin. There is so little traffic, we've never found it to be a problem.

We find the place to be perfect for reading, more reading and writing. Even better if you're an easily distracted writer with a book that really needs to come out (Speaking from experience here....).

You'll be on Elk Spur right off Lightening Ridge, which is right off the Blue Ridge Parkway a half mile from where it crosses old US 52. The Spur is dead end. While there are about 20 homes just past us in a recent development of weekenders, you can only see a few of them even in the Winter. There is little traffic, pretty much you and the hawks and a few deer.

During your stay
We live in Winston-Salem, exactly 59 minutes away, so you won't be interacting with us, unless you really want to. The place is entirely private; only one neighbor and Mickey likes to keep to himself. We do have some super local folks who clean and care for the place, so help is nearby if you need anything in a hurry. We've been rated at "superhosts" since we put the place on AirBNB and we expect that to be even better with our local friends backing things up.
