Cara Cottage is located on the outskirts of the village of Kilcoo in the heart of Mourne. In an idyllic quiet setting, there are breath-taking views and easy access to walking and biking trails nearby. A cosy one-bedroom detached cottage, sleeping 2 adults + 2 children or 4 adults, this is a perfect rural retreat for relaxation or a base to explore everything the local area has to offer.

The space
We’re ideally located for access to the many outdoor activities the Mournes have to offer. Within ten minutes of the cottage you’ll find Game of Thrones filming location Tollymore Forest, the buzzing seaside town of Newcastle, home of Royal County Down Golf Course and Slieve Donard, the highest mountain in Ulster.
Cara Cottage has a modern open plan kitchen, dining and living space. The fully equipped kitchen includes lots of storage and surface space, a fridge, oven/hob, microwave, toaster, and kettle. The dining table seats 4, and in the living room along with TV/DVD the multi-fuel stove is ideal for sitting by the fire in the evening. So you don’t have to worry, fuel for the fire is provided for you- enjoy!
The living room has a sofa bed which would suit 2 adults/children, and the bedroom has a double bed. A travel cot is available if needed, as well as a high chair/booster seat.
The bathroom has a full suite, including bath and separate electric shower and a hairdryer is provided. For laundry, there’s a utility space with storage, access to a clothes horse or outside line for drying and an iron and ironing board.
Cara Cottage is situated to the side/rear of our family home, so there’s ample parking at the front, and lots of space on the lawn to the side for a picnic on the grass or for children to safely play outside.
The easiest way to get around is by car, but buses run through Kilcoo village connecting us with Newry City, Castlewellan, Newcastle and onwards to Belfast. Kilcoo village is 5 minutes walk from Cara Cottage and has a mini supermarket, a food take-away, petrol station, and church. There are two local pubs which both serve food.
Nearby Castlewellan Castle, Lake, Forest Park, Arboretum and bike trail are definitely worth a visit, and don’t miss the Peace Maze, one of the world's largest permanent hedge mazes.
If you’re planning on exploring further afield, Downpatrick (burial place of Saint Patrick) is 20 minutes drive, Newry City is 25 minutes away, and Dublin is an hour down the motorway from there. Heading North, Belfast is 50 minutes by car from Cara Cottage.
Closer to home, if you’re discovering or revisiting the Mourne Mountains, we personally recommend the stunning Brandy Pad, Hares Gap and Trassey Track. Venture further and take in Spelga Dam and neighbouring Hilltown, only 10 minutes drive from Kilcoo. Onwards towards the beautiful coastal town of Rostrevor and Kilbroney Forest Park for more stunning scenery. We would suggest following the coast road, taking in Greencastle’s 13th Century Norman Castle, Cranfield’s beautiful sandy beach and Kilkeel Harbour. Continue along the coast through Ballymartin, Annalong and back to Newcastle for a bite to eat before heading home to Cara Cottage.
There are plenty of fantastic food options for you, such as Kilcoo’s own Greenan’s Steakhouse, as well as Maginns Bar & Restaurant in Castlewellan, and Villa Vinci, Vanilla, Great Jones’, and Brunel’s in Newcastle. Be sure to sample some famous Mourne seafood during your stay in Dundrum’s Mourne Seafood Bar too.

Hello and thanks for considering a visit to Cara Cottage, a child-friendly self-catering holiday accommodation. I am a mum of a newborn and a 4 year old, working locally and living next door to Cara Cottage with my husband and our dog Max. I've lived in the Mourne area all my life and it's a fantastic place to visit, with so many hidden local treasures so do let me know if you need any recommendations. The people here are some of the friendliest you'll come across anywhere in the world and we'll be happy to extend a very warm Mourne welcome to you.
