The Bar SZ Ranch is a genuine working family ranch. Enjoy horseback riding, roping, hayrides, skeet shooting, archery, seasonal creek walking, hiking, outdoor movies, and line dancing. And when the sun goes down, relax as a rancher would with a BBQ, bonfire, s'mores, and epic star gazing.

The space

This house is extremely unique as it is located on a very historical property in the heart of San Benito County. The ranch is known around the world as the Legendary Doc Bar Ranch, which was the home to the world famous cow horse Doc Bar. The house, once the art studio of world famous painter Thomas Kinkade, sits upon a beautiful and quiet hill that overlooks the valleys and mountains of the ranch. Picture windows allow for breathtaking views across the entire house. It is a truly amazing place to get away, relax, and rejuvenate.

The grounds are home to thousands of native birds and animals. We are just 10 minutes from the Pinnacles National Park which offers world-class hikes, rock climbing, and outdoor educational classes. The ranch is located 40 minutes from a town with shopping and restaurants.

*We have multiple houses on the property if you are looking to get a large group together. Please search Bar SZ Ranch or inquire within for more information.

Guest access

Guests are welcome to take walks around the ranch and enjoy the many mountain hikes and beautiful vistas! We also have an array of outdoor games for guests to enjoy, including horseshoes, volleyball, and croquet.

The house is private, but the rest of the ranch is a community property and all are welcome to engage in activities, based on the ranch's working schedule. All working ranch activities must be supervised by the managers. *Note: additional fees may be required for some activities such as trail rides, skeet shooting, and hunting. Please contact us for package info and pricing.

Interaction with guests

This is a working ranch. We welcome you to enjoy all aspects of ranch life with us (as much as you would like)! There is a managing family who lives on the property should our guests need anything. They are extremely happy to assist with anything from starting camp fires, to barbequing on our large outdoor grill, running to get supplies from town, or helping you experience the working side of the ranch. We want everyone's experience to be unique and suited to their personal desires. Daily chores include caring for all the ranch animals, tending to gardens, planted fields, and moving cattle, just to name a few. Guests can also enjoy guided horse back or trail rides. We really enjoy sharing all that this magnificent ranch has to offer!

Other things to note

This house is located just 10 min. from the Pinnacles National Park (America's newest national park), 30 minutes from San Benito's Wine Trail, 30 minutes from a sky diving/hang gliding park, and 40 minutes from Hollister Hills (off-road vehicle park).

The ranch was amazing. Lots of animals for the kids to interact with. We went horseback riding and got a lesson on how to care for the horses and how to get them geared up and ready to ride. The art house is a classic 70's styled ranch house with beautiful views. The photographer they suggest is amazing. Averi did an outstanding job for a quick family photo shoot. She kept our three boys engaged and smiling. 10 minutes to Pinnacles National Park. Great location and great family vacation.

Tim and Michelle were both really nice. We had a great time staying the night in the art house. Some of us went trail running at Pinnacles. Definitely check out the caves!

We used the ranch for a 13 person bachelor party and found it to be perfect for our party. Tim was a wonderful host who made us feel right at home and the house had everything we needed with great access to Pinnacles, and plenty to do on the ranch to keep us busy. I would happily recommend this place and Tim/Michelle.

I went to Tim and Michelle's ranch recently with 10 of my friends to celebrate my 30th birthday. All I can say is that my Big 30 couldn't have been more perfect! Tim and Michelle were amazing hosts, and took such great care of us. The ranch itself was amazing and offered a great mix of things to do or relax, whatever you prefer. The nights were particularly magical - 7 shooting stars in one night is quite a record!!! I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to get away from the city madness for a few days with friends/ family. Pinnacles is a 20 min drive so there is plenty to do at/ around the ranch. The Art House, which is where we stayed, was particularly beautiful! I would absolutely love to go stay there again for a longer duration. Thanks again Tim and Michelle for making the weekend so special for us :)

We absolutely LOVED our 3 days at Bar SZ with Tim and Michelle. We are a family of 4 from London with 2 teenage children and were looking for a first ranch experience that we could all enjoy. We also wanted to chill out together for a few days as part of our 3-week tour of California. What we liked best: 1. Tim & Michelle: they are both inspiring individuals who truly welcomed us into their lives and personally accommodated every request. They are passionate about Bar SZ and it was very special to spend time with them and hear their story. 2. We all had the opportunity to try out new activities under their very kind and constructive tutelage (as we live in London trail riding, herding cattle and shooting are not regular occurrences in our lives!) 3. The serenity: we really got to relax and the views on the ranch were stunning - especially from the Art House. There were many other touches that made our visit memorable (our daughter got to ride a different horse every day, s'mores around the camp fire, cutest ever baby animals including the 6 day old kittens, the piano, the amazing bird life in our tree,...etc). Staying at Bar SZ was a very positive experience for every member of our family and I very much hope we have the opportunity to return one day.

We LOVED this place, and Tim and Michelle are amazing hosts. It's a remote location that feels like you're on another planet, yet you're only 1.5 hrs from the bay area. Literally removed from everything, with landscapes that words cannot do justice. We rented out the Art house and the Cabin, which are next to each other, and had 5 families with lots of kids. Everyone had a blast, and no one wanted to leave...
