Over-looking the old farrier’s yard, new and stylishly converted into a romantic hideaway, a stay at the Retreat will make you relaxed and then reinvigorated. It offers all year round comfort and a refuge from a chaotic world in a hamlet tucked away in the folds of the hills behind Bruton.

The space

From the cobbled yard, the entrance hall leads either upstairs to where there is a luxurious bedroom with a king-size Vi-spring bed, and en-suite bathroom. Large windows overlook the countryside, filling the room with morning sunshine. Downstairs, has under-floor heating, a monsoon fitted shower-room, fully equipped kitchen adjoining a spacious sitting room with large windows, comfy sofas, bookshelves, cosy fireplace, wifi and the usual entertainment equipment.

"We booked as a 'mini-moon' to celebrate our wedding. The accommodation really didn't disappoint!" - Elizabeth Aug '17

Entirely self-contained and undisturbed, one can stay lazily ‘indoors’ for the entire time. Your hosts can be as invisible as you wish. Being a Retreat we respect our guest’s need for quiet enjoyment, but are just a phone call away.

"The Retreat is just that - a lovely cottage in a great location, quiet, secluded, and well kitted out." - Andy July '17

The area is famed for its choice of pubs, events, festivals and cultural activities. ... A framed map in the hall shows walks up Portway Hill through ancient woods. Amble along the ridge to Beacon Hill (think Spanish Armada) with magnificent views for miles or down along old drover’s tracks to funky Bruton for tea.

"The best part was hanging out in a beautiful place in the countryside and hearing the birds when we woke up. The place is absolutely stunning and perfect for country walks..." Charlie June '17

There is ample on site parking, however one can travel by train and finish the journey by taxi from either Castle Cary (10 minutes) or Templecombe (25 minutes) and we’d be happy to run you back to the station!

We very much look forward to seeing you.

Guest access

All of the open premises. Unfortunately the three steps down from hallway to the kitchen and those up to the bedroom make this unsuitable for wheelchair access.

Interaction with guests

Zoe will also be on hand if needed.

Other things to note

The bed is a V-spring Kingsize. It has a medium tension pocket sprung matress and sprung divan base for extra comfort. The pillows are feather and down and there are hyper-allegenic hollow fill alternatives available. The duvet is hollow fibre too.

If you have any allergies ... cleaning/laundry products or whatever, please let us know in advance so that we can make alternative arrangements.

The Old Rectory is a quality establishment! Zoe and Sean greeted us and could not have been more friendly and welcoming. The house is an annex of their beautiful old house, but quite separate and private. It was very clean (and I have high standards!) and was well decorated and equipped. We appreciated that basic such as tea, real coffee, milk and margarine were provided. Lots of space for parking.

Sean was a brilliant host and the house was perfect; quiet and so cosy! Lots of lovely touches really made our stay special; particularly fond of the Prosecco!

A private part of the grounds, with your own entrance and parking space. We felt very separate from the hosts (a good thing) , apart from the very nice welcome and when we asked them for help, when they truly obliged. I recommend.

A lovely stay at Sean's retreat. My sister and I felt very comfortable and Sean was very helpful and kind. I would recommend to others, thank you again Sean for a very pleasant stay.

Sean's airbnb surpassed our expectations! The surroundings are idyllic and the property is nestled peacefully in Somerset countryside. It has been finished to a high standard, and everything is of high quality and very cosy. Perfect sized kitchen with everything we needed, and large comfortable bedroom and beautiful bathroom. The milk, eggs, butter, fresh bread and prosecco were lovely welcoming touches and we felt right at home. Thank you Sean!

Fantastic location to relax and decompress. The Retreat was a little out of the way but Sean's directions were great, and he helpfully alerted me in advance to roadworks that were causing big delays. When I got there he was waiting to show me around then was very responsive the entire time I was there if I needed him but otherwise left me to myself. The Retreat is a wonderful property. It is very comfortable and has everything you need for a luxurious country break. It was spotlessly clean and very well equipt, and both the essentials and a few luxuries were left in the cottage by Sean & Zoe. The place is a little way from the nearest shop but not so far it is an issue - and it is a perfect base to explore the area. I spent my mornings around the cottage and the village, and each afternoon went off to explore the area (Wells, Glastonbury, Bath etc). I would thoroughly recommend The Retreat to anyone looking for a very comfortable and very relaxing escape to the country (as long as I can still find time there next time I want to)!
