Highland House was a very, very good experience. Our host, Lynn and her husband met us at the door and were gracious. My wife and I will stay here again. As this is a review, not a mystery you get the money shot first. I visit my daughter in Martinsville fairly often and have been underwhelmed by the local hotels. I planned a quick Christmas visit and found Highland House. Turns out less than two miles from my daughter in an older (and quiet) residential neighborhood. Lynn was responsive to my query and she filled in some blanks about the house. There was a water pressure issue in the kitchen that she was straight up about and I decided that it was low impact on comfort and convenience. Highland House is an older home (belonged to Lynn’s husband’s parents) and feels like ‘going to grandma’s house’. To imprint that feeling Lynn had setup a small Christmas tree with lights on the coffee table in the living room and next to it was a festively wrapped gift of local gourmet Virginia products. Nice touch – many innkeepers are professional, but gracious is what is remembered. Highland House was ultra clean when we arrived. The main floor where we stayed has two bedrooms – one currently setup for an office/study – which we found super convenient. (Wi-Fi was a steady 72Mbps) A fully equipped kitchen, a small separate dining room, bathroom, and living room complete the space. The basement has a washer/dryer which we did not need this trip and the upper level (scheduled for makeover) has two additional rooms. This is the quietest location for sleeping that we have found in a few years. The back of the house faces a well treed ravine for additional privacy and sound barrier. We took a walk around the neighborhood and Highland Street winds to a cul-de-sac – cutting out any through traffic. There was enough of everything. Lynn’s kitchen was equipped with a 12-cup coffee maker – and a huge supply of coffee. Everything we needed was there and easy to find. Think clean, quiet, comfortable, and cozy.
