Interaction with guests

My son and I will try to be there to greet you at the house in Kalapana gardens. Please follow directions provided because GPS can be wrong at times on the Big Island. We'll get you registered to come and go onto the property. I'll do walk thru of property with you or send you check in directions. I generally keep to myself when around but can also talk your ear off. I usually let the guest decide level of interaction. I love to spread the aloha so any questions you have feel free to ask!

The owner of the house Kenny lives upstairs and is very friendly and knowledgeable. Say hi if you see him and he may even offer you some fresh picked local fruit of your lucky!

Other things to note

For more then two guests the extra bed is a pull out queen sofa bed.

Currently a cooler with ice packs are provided. There is no fridge. Additional coolers are available if needed.

Shoes are recommended out here as cuts to the feet are very common. No shoes in the house please.

This is a down stairs one bedroom house with own entrance. The owner Kenny lives upstairs, has a separate entrance and he's very friendly and knowledgeable.

Please arrive before 9pm and if arriving late please be mindful of noise as its very quiet out here. Please turn off headlights of car right away so you don't light up the neighbor's houses. Use common sense.

Common sense disclaimer: I have to put this on here because some people don't have any. 1st: the lava is 4 miles away not right in front of the house. If it was civil defense would evacuate us. 2nd: The lava changes hourly and so does the view. Just because one guest says they could see the lava river glowing from the bed at night doesn't mean you'll be able too. I have no control over mother nature. 3rd: If its overcast and raining you might not be able to see the ocean, the stars at night or the glow of lava. Again I don't control the weather or mother nature. 4th: read house rules and follow them. Turn off all lights when not needed, turn off and conserve water and close all windows when you leave.

Medical marijuana is legal in Hawaii and this property may have medicinal plants being grown on it at times. If you have an issue with that find another place to rent.

An absolutely amazing location , great hosts . Couldn’t of asked for a better way to experience Hilo and the lava fields . Would highly recommend Sean and Zorro’s place to anyone.

Incredible setting right on the lava, just off the (restricted) road to the lava viewing site. We were instantly welcomed by our upstairs neighbor for the night, Kenny, who owned the house. He told us the fascinating history of the area, talked about the way of life he had chosen, and explained how we were sitting on top of a subdivision that was wiped out by a lava flow. Everyone in the neighborhood knew their houses could be destroyed again, so most of the buildings looked pretty temporary -- this was one of the nicer houses. Because it was thunderstorming/flooding, the lava viewing site was closed the night we stayed here, however we were still able to see the red glow of the caldera and the lava coming down the mountain just a couple of miles away. It was a humbling reminder that a small shift in the lava flow could make a huge impact on the surrounding landscape. In the morning, we awoke to sunshine and a view of the ocean. Kenny shared local fruits he had foraged from the surrounding hills, and even cut the tops of some coconuts so we could drink the water for breakfast. What an incredible, memorable experience. Just one (tiny) downside to living "off the grid": The power was solar or generator-powered, so it wasn't super reliable. Tip: be sure to pack a headlamp and/or cell phone battery if light and connectivity are important to you. Otherwise, just take the time to enjoy your surroundings. I could go on and on about this place -- but suffice to say it's a gem on Airbnb. As someone else said, if you're hesitating about whether or not to book, just do it!

Stunning location that was unlike anything we'd experienced. I never knew pahoehoe had rainbows of color laced throughout it, nor that small gardens could start on the lava with the right care. Sean's apartment was clean and comfortable, and we especially enjoyed chatting with his knowledgeable, thoughtful upstairs neighbor Kenny. There is a lot to explore in this area, and I wish we could have stayed longer.

Great place for volcano trekking, especially late at night when all the other tourists have left. Be prepared to hike a very long way to get the best from this location even though you can't stay any closer to the live flowing lava! Although we didn't, we would recommend bike hire to get along the 4 miles of road to the start of the trek out to the flow. Loved the whole experience!!

If you're looking for total luxury keep scrolling. If you're looking for a truly unique off the grid experience with all the luxuries of home then you've found the place. From the moment we drove in we fell in love with moon/mars like landscape. The home itself had everything needed. If you get the chance to meet kenny who lives upstairs his tips will make your stay that much better. So much to do so nearby. Lava entry tip would be to speak to one of the rental places tell them you're staying in the gardens and get a bike overnight. Leave around 4:30/5am you'll get a magical experience with out all the crowds.

It‘s got all you need at that place. I slept great because it is so quiet. At night i saw the lava flowing from my bed! It‘s a unique place!

Single Dad raising a five year old boy in Hawaiian style living. Where everyone is ohana, mālama ia Hawai'i (take care of Hawai'i), share the aloha and no shoes and shirt are the norm. For fourteen years I have been fortunate to be a Hawaii resident. Living on multiple islands I decided Hawaii was home and sunny Kalapana was the paradise I was searching for.
We purchased and manage two different local properties here on Air bnb.
Raising my son Zorro in Hawaiian style promotes his interaction with guests.
Feel free to ask him for his 5 yr old opinion. He is fun.
Surfing, fishing, hiking and gardening are what we do anytime we can.
