Located on the river in Welch, the center of McDowell County. This historic home along with the house next door have recently been completely remodeled to house teachers. We would like to also provide visitors to our area with a quality place to stay during your visit, therefore we have reserved one apartment for this purpose.

The space

The renovation of this home was completed by Warrior Creek Development, a social enterprise dedicated to the revitalization of McDowell County. We saw a need to create more housing options for recruitment and retention of teachers. The construction was completed by young men from the county who are being mentored by Warrior Creek Development in residential construction.

I learned about Chris an Elise's place from someone in the community while in West Virginia on a business trip. I checked their reviews and didn't hesitate to book it for a 10-day stay that extended 12 days. Chris and Elise and baby Savannah were great hosts, warm, welcoming and gracious like the people of McDowell. The apartment was just as depicted: clean, modern, spacious, well appointed and uber convenient for my needs. Easy access parking was a significant plus, too. As others have noted, the train noise takes some getting use to. However, trains are a fact of life in Welch and McDowell. Train traffic are a sign people are working.

I chose the apartment because it was reasonably priced (offering a generous monthly discount option) and stayed the entire month of August 2017. During this time, I commuted to/from Oakwood VA for work. The location is central in Welch and convenient (less than 20-minute drive) to groceries, gasoline or fast food. I would visit Bluefield VA/WV during the weekends to shop as well, a (very scenic) 1-hour drive along US-52. The apartment is the entire 2nd floor and both modern and IMMACULATE. It is surprisingly spacious with an open kitchen and living room but also affords privacy for the 2 separate bedrooms. I thoroughly enjoyed the deck with table and chairs and on-site W/D to use. The kitchen is stocked with utensils which made meal prep easy. I tend to keep to myself but I will add that Chris and Elise are easy to communicate with and gracious hosts. They were kind enough to share their baked ziti one evening (delicious!!). I cannot emphasize enough how much this apartment served my needs at the time. It was safe, clean and had an EXCELLENT Wi-Fi connection. I will acknowledge that there was a lot of train traffic and associated noises, but it was not an issue for me as I am accustomed to city and traffic noise. If you are a light sleeper, you will need ear plugs. I will look to stay here again when I return to hit the ATV trails. Parking is easy in/out for trailers, FLAT and across the street.

The apartment is nearly new and spotlessly clean. My wife and I were in town to visit my brother and his family. It was great to find a place to stay in Welch. In the past we've had to stay out of town. Chris and Elise are busy people, but we had a nice time talking with them about Welch and their work. We did hear the trains, however, as former West Virginians we found the sounds comforting.

Chris and Elsie are wonderful hosts and delightful people. The apartment is lovely, the beds comfortable, the price fair, and the location ideal if you want to be in or around Welch, West Virginia. I loved it there. One consideration to keep in mind if you are sensitive to nighttime noise; the apartment is close to the railroad tracks and the trains run at night and can be loud. This did not bother me, but some people it might.

The apartment is new, clean and beautifully decorated. There are train tracks across the street and the train horns sound several times during the night. The traffic is also loud during the night.

My wife Elise and I have lived in McDowell County since November 2015. We moved from New England to help the community through outreach and ministry and we've fallen in love with the area and the people here. We love to go for walks, listen to music, travel anywhere & everywhere, and meet new friends.
