THIS HOUSE IS WOODEN AND BUILT IN THE OLDER CARIBBEAN STYLE. IT IS LOCATED ON THE WINDWARD SIDE OF THE LARGEST MOUNTAIN ON THE ISLAND " MT. PLEASANT" AND IS SET AWAY FROM THE ACTIVITY AND NOISE OF THE REST OF THE ISLAND. NOW WITH FREE WIFI.
MELINDA'S HOUSE is a new, spacious, wooden ECO house located on a large property on the Windward side of Mt. Pleasant on the Caribbean Island of Bequia, one of the islands in a chain belonging to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The favorite of sailors from around the world.
The house is airy with large, shuttered windows and cooled by gentle breezes that waft through carrying the fragrance of the flowering bushes planted around it. Most of the property is untouched and filled with wildlife and huge, ancient trees full of birds. You can watch the clouds change color at sunset and listen to the birdsong from the 2 porches, one off the bedroom and the other off the living room. It sleeps 3, two in the bedroom and one on the single bed in the living room which serves as a couch during the day. Both rooms have mosquito netting and fans. There is parking for one vehicle and wonderful views within walking distance of the house. Mt.Pleasant was the haven for the more wealthy original families in the olden days and the property borders the land and private home of the ex Prime Minister's amazing house and his expanse of private land. There are street lights on the main road and the neighborhood is one of the safer areas of the island.
The island is awash in wonderful places to see, many great beaches and historical areas. There are restaurants featuring local and European cuisine plus endless beach bars, dive shops boutiques etc. Bequia is famous for it's model boat builders and artisans and the friendliness and hospitality of the people. Don't miss the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. There is live music almost every night from various venues around the island, all of which are a short drive from the house.
There are 2 ways to reach Bequia, by air from Barbados or St.Vincent, or Ferrys which run throughout the day to and from Kingtown, St. Vincent. There's a good site for info at bequia net info.
If you rent the house I will arrange for a taxi to pick you up at the airport or Ferry dock and take you to the house. The taxis I use are run by the same people who care for the house and they are a font of information if you need anything or have any questions.
Note......there is no hot water in the house as yet. When I can afford it I will put in a solar hot water heater. In the meantime there is warm water before sunset when the black upper tank is still getting some sun and the water is never really cold. Also, as you can see from the first picture , there is a space about 4 inches wide between the roof and the walls. This is to allow for circulation of air to cool the house and is typical of traditional Caribbean wooden houses. If it were not there the house could get to be like an oven as it has a galvanized roof. This space also allows access for small wildlife to enter. Just remember that any one of the critters that may share the house with you are not interested in you but in eating other creatures that WOULD eat you. As long as you close the shutters after dark there should be no problem with insects, etc entering that are attracted by lights. There are mosquito nets over the beds and a fan in the bedroom. The house is on the windward side of the island and so is usually cooler and with a breeze than in other sections of the island.
The house is cleaned regularly even when it is not rented and will be gone through thoroughly before you arrive and after you leave. If you are staying for awhile you can arrange with Sandra to have someone come in and clean and do laundry for you while you are there.
