Time travel does exist! Five hundred years old, ten years in the making and now you can stay a night! Imagine being transported back through five centuries and having your very own unique, romantic "overknighter" in The Great Hall of our authentic 16th century Irish castle. The Black Castle is nestled amongst the beautiful rolling hills of North Tipperary (it's not such a long way!) with stunning Lough Derg, and all that it has to offer, on our doorstep #winteriscoming
UPDATE Winter is coming and we are essentially closed for the duration..... but....if you're tougher than Valyrian steel and adventurous enough to brave a winter stay please contact us. Our overknighters will resume next year, once Winter has come and gone.
The Black Castle is a wonderful, secluded sanctuary for history and nature lovers, artists, writers, musicians or anyone looking to totally disconnect from the 21st century.
Built by the O'Kennedys in the 1500's, its rugged "realm" is surrounded by fields, forestry and ancient woods and bordered by a crystal clear stream. Access is via its own private road, with no passing traffic, just off The Lough Derg Scenic Drive.
You will be staying in our authentically furnished Great Hall. The beautiful, bespoke King size bed is fit for royalty with finest quality bedding, crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, luxurious duvet and down pillows.
Our aspiration is to offer you the most unique, authentic castle experience possible and to recreate the atmosphere of what it would be like to immerse yourself in the 16th century. This means there are all the mod-cons one would expect 500 years ago.... ie there is NO heating (except the open fireplace and two hot water bottles), NO TV, NO CD/DVD player and (gasp!) NO Wi-Fi (you'll have a lovely time talking to each other) however there are some books to browse and games provided including replica 18th century playing cards, a delightful Lewis Chess set and a Fidchell (Celtic chess) set . There is NO ELECTRICITY whatsoever in The Great Hall, only the warm glow of candlelight and firelight (we provide abundant candles and fuel), but staying at The Black Castle doesn't mean you have to go completely back to The Dark Ages as THERE IS ELECTRICITY in the "kitchenette" (a room below The Great Hall) where you can recharge your phone or tablet etc. There's also a mini fridge/freezer, an electric kettle, a DeLonghi coffee machine with a variety of Nespresso coffees, two electric induction cooking rings, a double toaster and a sink with hot and cold water. A Continental style breakfast is provided which includes speciality teas, quality coffee, bread, cereals, yogurts, juice, fruit and local produce (where possible). We also provide eggs and bacon if you would like to cook yourself a hot breakfast. A welcome hamper, with a sweet treat or two and other essentials, is also provided.
The Great Hall is on the second floor and the only access is by our 16th century stone spiral staircase which means that the Black Castle may unfortunately not be suitable if you have restricted mobility.
NB: The "BATHROOM" consists of a DRY ECO TOILET (composting toilet/"gardaloo"© Cody Long ;-) thank you!) with natural, handmade soap and hand towels provided. There is NO SHOWER or BATH at the castle.
The castle will be EXCLUSIVELY YOUR SPACE during your stay. We are on site, just in case you need us for anything, but out of sight during your visit.
Not only is the castle exclusively yours during your overknighter, venture outside and there's 13 acres for you to explore too. Next to the campfire, there’s also a rustic "table" and seating for dining al fresco if the weather is fine.
We are slowly restoring The Black Castle but The Great Hall is now complete. By choosing to stay here you will become entwined in the castle's history (and its future!) as any "profit" we make from your "overknighter" will go straight back into the restoration, meaning you're helping The Black Castle "earn its keep", enabling it to stand proud for another 500 years.
Speaking of 500 years, this is an ancient building, not built for modern standards/sensibilities so please bear this in mind.
The Black Castle is approximately an hour’s drive north east of Shannon International airport, via the M7 motorway, 2 hours via the M50/M7 motorway from Dublin/Dublin International airport. It's roughly a ten to fifteen min drive to the popular lakeside villages of Dromineer and Terryglass, and fifteen min drive south to Nenagh town. The pretty village of Puckaun is about 5 min away and has a grocery shop and two pubs. Unfortunately, there is no public transport in the area so you will require your own mode of transport.
We want you to have an unforgettable experience (in the best way) at The Black Castle so if you’re the adventurous type who is looking for something truly different and can happily survive without some 21st Century comforts for one night then this might just be the place for you. Any questions about your stay, please feel free to ask me.
This really is a beautiful area, with lots of accommodation and eating options, and if you would like to spend more time exploring it before or after your overknighter at The Black Castle we would be happy to provide more information and suggestions.
The castle and its "kingdom" (the surrounding 13 acres) will be exclusively your space during your stay.
Interaction with guests
Upon arrival, we will give you a tour of the castle, show you how everything works and then leave you in peace but we're available if you need any assistance during your stay.
Other things to note
STRICTLY NO SMOKING anywhere inside the castle please.
To avoid disappointment, please make sure that you have thoroughly read the above descriptions and understand what amenities are and are not available at the castle. G'day! I'm a nature-lovin, tree-huggin Aussie living in Ireland. My Irish husband, Kevin, and I are passionate about Ireland's architectural heritage and we were over the moon when our 400 year old thatched farmhouse was awarded Period Living magazine's Best Restoration (Britain and Ireland) in 2011. Looking for a new challenge, we turned our sights on restoring our little Irish castle.
