The space

La Palapa is a brand new 2 room bungalow located in the perfect surf village hideaway of El Paredon on the pacific coast of Guatemala, approximately 2 hour drive away from Antigua and the city. It offers the ideal setting for a relaxing holiday or few days away from the city, be it with friends or family, in a quiet location just a couple of minutes easy walk of 150m to the beach.

Our place comfortably sleeps 4 or 5 adults, or 4 adults and 2 children. We have a caretaker and cleaner who live next door, who are always available with a quick phone call if you need them. We have an open air living area with sofa, hammocks, BBQ, and Asian style dining area. The Master bedroom upstairs has an open concept with ocean view and Queen size bed, lounge area with hammocks and a breakfast bar. There is plenty of space of upstairs or downstairs for the extra air mattress. Downstairs has a kitchen and extra sofa-bed to convert into the second bedroom for those who need it. Mosquito nets are provided for all sleeping areas. The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, coffee maker, stove and all utensils. Alternatively if you don’t feel like cooking, just across the street we have a whole range of restaurant options including international standard pizza, Thai or Indian food, and even British-style fish and chips. Also there is a small grocery store next door for all your basic needs with a market in the village for fruits and vegetables, and a fishmonger for freshly caught seafood.

We have surf all year round in Paredon, and depending on the time of the year you can see Dolphins, Whales and Manta Rays. If you need help with anything, we can help arrange surf lessons, mangrove tours, transport to and from the airport and a local cook to come and make fresh seafood sourced in the fish market that day.

For us, we love spending time at the beach house to give us an opportunity to abandon routine and embrace personal freedom, and therefore we don’t have wifi. It is incredibly easy to purchase a local sim card, and use decent 3G in the area if required though. If you are looking for a place to just relax and unwind, read a book, surf, take long walks on the beach, and enjoy the peace and quiet of Guatemalan village life, then La Palapa and El Paredon is a perfect place for it.

The house was wonderful and exactly what I pictured it to be. The only note I would give first time El Paredon goers is that you can hang out by any of the hotel pools closer to the water during the day because the Pacific coast here in Guatemala is so hot that you'll always want to be near water :) One of my favorite things was the we were able to have the option of hanging out at restaurants and hostels, but then also the privacy of our own home and to stay in and cook some nights.

We really enjoyed Sarah's house, the setting is beautiful and we loved how open and breeze it is. The caretaker is very attentive and helped us with everything we needed. The Palapa is such an authentic taste of the beautiful coastline town of Paredon. You have surfing, river tours, local little restaurants, and a very secluded feel from tourists and city life. The palapa is open and breezy with an extraordinary experience. I love the outdoor bathroom and view from the upstairs room. Sarah was super attentive, communicative, and helpful. She made our stay really special.

The place is even better than it is described in the information. Me and my family had a lovely time staying at La Palapa. This house was very clean and cosy, and is located in a beautiful area of the Pacific coast, not far from the beach. It is only a really short walk from the ocean or from the little town of Paredon, but has a shop right next door which was super convenient for the things we needed. We loved just being able to walk 30 seconds to a local shop for ice creams and cold drinks. It is literally seconds from everywhere, but also feels really secluded which was awesome for us. I love the green fence that they are growing around the periphery, and all the plants that they have been planting in their garden. I can see how that will really be even more of an asset to the property when the rain comes a little more regularly. Saul and Sarah were lovely and kind with us. Although we didn't meet them face to face as they live in the city, they were incredibly helpful with answering all of our questions by email beforehand, and phone even during the day when they were working. We don't speak any Spanish so their caretaker Fani made sure he called Saul when we arrived to translate any questions we had. We actually booked at really short notice as we were already staying at a bungalow there, and wanted to extend our stay but our original place was full. We had noticed La Palapa as we were eating at the pizza place next door, and had randomly been talking to the guests who were staying there at the time who were also eating in the pizza place. They had recommended it to us. I'm pretty sure this house is one of the best choices if you want to stay in El Paradon but want the freedom of being able to cook for yourself and have a bit more space. Everything was great.... we really didn't expect such good attention and such an amazing place for this price. You can't even find a bungalow with a shared bathroom in this area of the pacific for the price, so were more than happy to stumble on La Palapa. If you are looking for a little beach house without all the extra costs and expenses that some of the big houses in Monterrico come with, or if you are trying to decide between one of the local bungalows and an actual house, then this place is definitely for you. We highly recommended this place!

Response from Sarah:
Thank you for such lovely comments Mark. We are really glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay so much. I am glad you noticed the green fence. We are excited to see it grow when the rainy season starts. I am also pleased you found us to be good value for money as this is one of the things we were aiming for when we built our place this year. I know I was struggling to find affordable houses to rent at the coast in Guatemala, so wanted to make more options for other people who wanted to be able to be self-sufficient without paying too much. We look forward to welcoming you guys again in the future.
