The space

The house feels like a Temple, it is an oasis of calm. Scent of Ethiopian incense accompanies the fresh coffee in the morning. Breakfast is freshly made juice, raw chia or oat porridge, or fresh croissants from the local bakery. The rooms are vast and uncluttered, and individually styled. The yoga shala is on the top floor, overlooking the medieval roof tops, greeting the morning sun. There is plenty of space in the house and in the garden where you can relax or get to know like-minded guests (maximum guests in the centre is 12).

I stayed at Gertrud's beautiful house with my partner for just three nights. During that time, we fell in love with the stunning architure of her house which is gradually being sympathetically restored by Gertrude. Her vast, but carefully curated treasures from around the world, are dotted around the house and each item has an interesting story. We stayed in a grand and uncluttered suite with a large bathroom to ourselves. We had a free-standing bath and underfloor heating. The windows overlook the large, peaceful garden which has a grass labyrinth, an orangery and many quiet corners where one may sit and reflect. The church tower can be seen from the garden and is stunning at night when it is lit up. We were lucky enough to sample the results of Gertrud's legendary culinary skills when we had breakfast with her each day. She made us fermented chickpea pancakes and the best spelt bread I have ever eaten. In return, we taught her the secret of English roast potatoes! Gertrud has formalised Embodied Meditation and teaches this practice and yoga with passion to retreatants every morning in her yoga shala (studio). Silence is observed until breakfast at 10am which we found a useful focus for self-reflection. We attended the sessions each day and, even in such a short time, we both found beneficial changes occurring and are inspired to continue the practice when we return home. Gertrud truly is the divine feminine and a force of nature. We were fortunate enough to have her accompany us to a beautiful gorge one day (Gorge Garramous?) and spend some time with her. We found her to be very open, genuine and down-to-earth at the same time as being peaceful and spiritual. The end of our holiday came much too quickly and we would both love to return again. A life-changing experience.

I left Paris for a short stay at Yobaba Lounge and every moment there was worth the time away from what might have otherwise been 10 lovely days in Paris. I wanted for nothing at Yobaba Lounge. Gertrud's capacity to welcome & make you feel at home is unparalleled. Her cooking is so amazing it elicits praise at every meal (and I actually found myself missing her food the minute I left). The house itself folds you into a relaxing, deep, nurturing embrace, where you can rest, wander, meditate, do yoga, and enjoy solitude and quiet or connection with others. Naela's talents and companionship at Yobaba are a great bonus in this already beautiful and powerful atmosphere. Although I was there for a self-guided rather than group retreat, I always felt supported and loved Gertrud's yoga class and guidance, which she led at invitation and never with any requirement. Gertrud is among the best yoga teachers I've ever had over decades of practicing. I highly recommend a stay at Yobaba and feel grateful for a beautiful visit there.

Gertrud User Profile

Gertrud is a retired international fencing athlete, a massage therapist, and a Reiki practitioner. She has studied different approaches to meditation and mindfulness and has a deep interest in the non-dual philosophies detailed in the eastern Shaivinist Tantras. Drawing on these and other interests, Gertrud has formalised a mindfulness practice called Embodied Meditation, which she teaches on retreat at Yobaba Lounge. The practice incorporates use of Ujjayi breath, mindful movement, and uses sound and visualisations to facilitate a deep state of meditation and awareness of inner space.

She has transformed her own life through this comprehensive healing practice.

Gertrud has also developed a mindfulness food philosophy and clean food diet which compliments and accompanies the retreats she runs.

Gertrud is hugely grateful to her teachers Anaiya Sophia, Maria Rawlins, Mangalo, Amaranatho and authors, current and historical, whose writings have given context to her journey.

Gertrud now spends her time between London and the village chateau she renovated in Chalabre, situated in one of the most magical areas of the Southern-French Pyrenees.
