The island is popular with visitors who wish to enjoy an island of incredible beauty, steeped in history, plenty of outdoor activities and great pubs and restaurants. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge at Portmagee, and there is a ferry service from April to November between Knightstown and Renard Point (for Cahirsiveen). Boat trips to visit the famous Skellig Rocks go from nearby Portmagee and can be arranged locally.Valentia Island is connect to the mainland by a bridge at Portmagee, and there is a ferry service from April to October between Knightstown and Reenard Point, Cahirciveen.

Situated in the old village of Dohilla, Coastguard Patch is originally one of twelve stone houses built at the end of the eighteenth century for coastguard families. In the nineteenth century, the houses were occupied by mining families. Slate from this mine roofed the Houses of Parliament in London and the British Museum. Close by on the sea shore is a geological site of world importance, the footprints preserved in sandstone of a tetrapod dated to 385 million years ago. A tetrapod was the first fish-like animal which developed four legs and drew itself out of the primordial slime at at the estuary of an ancient river.
