The Cottage is in a group of original 18th Cent Irish farm buildings in the Wicklow Hills, 6 km from Glendalough ruins and National Park trails. Located at the home and studios of artist Patrick Walshe and his designer wife Rosalind, it is set in a courtyard off a quiet roadway (L6124), 4km from the villages of Laragh and Rathdrum, one hour from Dublin city. It is an ideal base for exploring this beautiful part of Ireland. A peaceful rural hideaway.

The space

Perfect as a quiet getaway, for hiking the mountains, or even as a base for exploring Dublin and the Southeast if you come from overseas. A friendly, cozy, country experience with a wood burning stove and exceptional comfort. A lot of thought has gone into the renovation, making this a special place to relax.

Guest access

The Stable Cottage is a completely separate building from the Walshe’s traditional Irish home but has a common driveway and courtyard. Relax in the garden or sit by the fish pond in the rose courtyard. We welcome you to share our rural haven surrounded by sheep fields, trees and birdsong.

Interaction with guests

Artist Patrick Walshe, the owner is often available on request for art discussions, local insights, walks, tall tales and hiking guidance. On the other hand you can expect total privacy if you so desire.

Other things to note

We have two very friendly dogs, Jellybean and Popeye, but please leave yours at home as we are surrounded by sheep fields and chasing the sheep does not go down well with the farmers !
Our water comes from our own well and is the most delicious mountain beverage, straight from the tap!!!
There is a gas fired barbeque and an outside wood-fired pizza oven for the adventurous!

Patrick and Roz were outstanding hosts. We arrived late and Patrick was there to greet us. The fridge was stocked with the essentials (eggs, jam, milk, scones), there was fresh brown bread, and coffee/tea.  The house is set in the country with sheep very close. It was absolutely lovely. The beds were amazing and the showers were outstanding!  Patrick and Roz were very knowledgeable of the area and gave us great suggestions on places to visit. Patrick was very helpful whenever we had a question. And visits from the pups (jellybean and popeye) were great too! If you are planning to be in this area of Ireland I would highly recommend staying here. You will have a lovely stay!

Patrick is the epitome of hospitality & generosity. Not only did we adore his home and dogs, we were treated with so much warmth from the very beginning when he offered us a ride from the train station, then a pot of coffee and great conversation at his home. There's even an apple tree you can pick from! We wish we could spend more time there & will always carry fond memories of Rathdrum due to an incredible host.

We stayed at Patrick's lovely cottage while attending a wedding in Wicklow in August. Everything about our stay was incredible. Patrick was an amazing host - greeting us at the house with a fridge full of homemade scones and bread, fresh picked apples, and his two adorable dogs (Jellybean and Popeye). From the first communication it really felt like staying with an old friend. He had a great guidebook of recommendations and was always quick to give directions and suggestions for meals, hikes, drives, you name it. The rental itself is a quaint refurbished stable house/art studio with brand new fixtures and appliances, but with a funky artist vibe and a traditional exterior that are quintessentially "Irish Countryside." Make sure to visit the Avondale House and Forest Park (Patrick's suggestion and about 15-20 minutes drive) - it is a gorgeous park with all kinds of trees from around the world and a scenic hiking trail along the river - a must see! Patrick (and his wife Ros) were some of the best hosts I have ever had and I can't wait to come back to Rathdrum to stay again!
