I can't say enough good things about Maria and her house in Cardedeu. Don't stay in Barcelona; you miss out on a vibrant and beautiful slice of real Catalonia life, away from the tenement apartments and tourist craziness. We took the 40-minute train ride into town about every other day across a three-week stay and wouldn't have traded Barcelona for one of the outlying villages for anything. There is something special to being out in a place where the local church bells still keep time, where businesses shut down for a few hours every afternoon so parents can go to one of the many parks or to the square with their kids after school. (Of course the shops reopen from 5-9 PM or so.) Maria is amazing. We had a situation in town that required a translator: I speak several languages, but Catalan is not one of them, and I am still learning Spanish. Maria dropped whatever she was doing and walked over to help. No questions, no hesitation. What an amazing and hospitable lady she is. To say the apartment was clean doesn't begin to describe this tasteful and spacious art-house. The apartment is one of three apartments carved out of a townhouse-style building that was a painter's family home for many years. The home is decorated with art and artefacts from the world over, collected across a lifetime. Marks on a doorframe still record the growth of children, and it's adorable. The bathroom has beautiful tile work, and the kitchen had every piece of cookware we could want, far more than we needed. It's not crowded or overdone at all since the apartment is HUGE with a lovely vined terrace out back, overlooking the family's peacock pen and a few trees. There are small details like hand-painted flowers and vines on the ceiling, cabinets, and closet doors. The house contains a small office, a large dine-in kitchen, a full bath, a laundry room that doubles as a second bathroom, two full-sized (very big) bedrooms, a large living room with TV, and a lounge with formal dining table and second couch and sitting area. Noise from the street and from the apartment above were bothersome occasionally, but it was never a problem. The building was built in 1921, after all. If there is any caveat I'd give, it is that there is heat but no A/C in the house. We stayed in October and had no problems, but it may get warmer in the house during summer months than some Americans like myself may like only because we tend to worship our A/C, unlike most of the rest of the world. As long as you expect it, it won't be an issue. Besides, it's not as though the absence of A/C is unique to this house. If you plan to visit Europe for any length of time or as anything but the most basic of tourists, you're well-advised to get used to no air conditioning. In summary I'd stay...

Maria's place is a real treasure. All the basics are provides for and the apartment was clean, spacious and beautiful. Within 45min you can be in Barcelon by train and the station is only a 5min walk away. Around Maria's place in Cardedeu there are quite some shops, supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants! Maria was super helpful before, after and during our stay, and communication was easy and very good - you can ask her anything! There are some stairs to her apartment but it is nothing too extreme, very doable. Please be aware that the mosquitos can be quite vicious! So buy a repellent and some after-bite at the pharmacy 1min from the station, and enjoy your stay!

You can expect a friendly Host an amazing spanish/katalan village with nice options for restaurants, a Supermarkt in walking distance, some amazing old buildings. Cardedeu is worth visiting itself, the train station is in walking distance and in ~40min you are anywhere in Barcelona. Having a car would be an even better option but not recommend to drive through down town Barcelona.

Maria was really nice and helpful. She gave my family and I a map to where to go and told us about the festivals going around. Overall it was a great place and would stay there again next time im in Spain.

Marias place is exactly as shown in the pictures. We were two families with two babies and Maria organized an additional baby bed for us. We had a good time and recommend the flat

Good location though parking at the weekend was very difficult resulting in a parking ticket for us. Some noise heard late evening and during the night when in main front bedroom. Some kitchen utensils required washing prior to our use. Lovely large apartment with nice sun terrace. Great to hear the birds (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)ing and the peacocks honking! Comfortable beds. Maria said she was due to replace the 'collapsible' table on the terrace! She was very helpful in pointing out places to eat etc. Also very flexible and communication good. Many thanks.

Response from Maria:
Hello Susan It is usually a quiet place. The weekend was the Sant Isidre Fair and there were many people in the village. Certainly parking was difficult these days. Sorry for that and the noise. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the days. Thank you for your comments
