Description

The space

Valentia Island is an area of breathtaking scenery on the Skellig Ring and the Wild Atlantic Way.

My home is right in the center of this stunning landscape, which is perfect for walking, fishing, painting, photography and generally relaxing.

You have your own large double-bed room with a large, ornate pine queen-size bed, at the front of the house with stunning views over Portmagee Bay. Your room has en-suite shower and toilet and a spacious walk-in wardrobe.

The room (and the front of the house) is South-West facing and gets lots of light all day. There are wonderful views from the garden (which has a patio table and chairs) over Portmagee bay to the left and front - and the Skellig Rocks, to the far right.

There is also a modern, well equipped bathroom for guest use just across the hall should you wish to take a bath, rather than a shower (this bathroom is for guest use and is not shared by the host).

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soft drinks and biscuits are always available to you in the large, extremely well equipped kitchen and dining area. Feel free to use the toasted sandwich maker.

The breakfast area has a large, solid pine table, and includes two original traditional Irish "Sugán" chairs (with woven straw seat). This room also has excellent views of Portmagee Bay from the large patio door and picture window.

You are welcome to spend as much time as you wish in the well-appointed sitting room. Read a book from the well-stocked library shelves, in the sun-room or on the patio, if you wish, with more superb views towards the Skellig Rocks, or just enjoy the scenery and relax.

Interaction with guests

I am really looking forward to meeting you and adding to your experience of this wonderful part of the world. I will do whatever I can to make your stay as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible.

If I say so myself, I'm a pretty good cook and I will enjoy showing off my skills by cooking a full Irish breakfast for you, or offering you a lighter alternative if preferred. Please let me know of any special dietary requirements you may have.

If you need help with booking trip or need to use the computer to print a document or send an email - or anything else - just ask!

Of course, if you wish to just enjoy your stay quietly, and get on with your own "thing", you'll hardly know I'm here. :)

The neighbourhood

THE LOCATION

Valentia Island is one of the most popular destinations on the Ring of Kerry. This house is within walking distance of many areas of the Island including Bray Head and Geokaun Mountain and Cliff’s with its stunning vista’s and alluring walking paths.

With vantage points over some of the most exceptional sights along the Wild Atlantic Way, nestled in the Southern Peninsulas, a trip to Valentia Island and it’s Lighthouse offers a serene slice of island life, still close to mainland Ireland.

It is a short drive from the house to beautiful Knightstown and Portmagee with their cafes, pubs and shops. Busier Cahersiveen or Waterville towns are only a 20 minute drive away, each.

Getting around

I will meet you at an agreed rendezvous point, to help you find the house if needed. A car is essential in this part of the world for those who may wish to venture further afield.

Other things to note

I am an award-winning professional photographer, writer and photography teacher. My recent publications have included a book of landscape photographs from South Kerry (which was featured on Irish TV) and a book of photographs of traditional Irish musicians.

I love to talk about photography and I will be glad to offer some hints and tips should you wish to ask me a question.

Anyone interested in learning more about how to use their cameras - either for general use or landscape photography - can avail of half or full day teaching sessions or longer workshops from me. Professional photo-shoots are also available if required.

We really enjoyed our stay at Stephen's home. We did not had any issues finding the place and Stephen was very keen to give us a lot of suggestions of things to do in the area. The place is very clean, quiet and far far away from civilization. Perfect place to stay if you want to visit the area. (i.e. Skellig Michael and Geokan mountain). Stepen also prepared a proper Irish breakfast in the morning for us! Amazing!

If you are looking for a place in a wonderful area and you are looking for sharing a good moment with your host Stephen is the one. Breakfast was very good. Thank you Stephen for hosting us and we hope to see you again as soon as possible. Recommended at 100% for other travelers.

Stephen is an excellent host, very thoughtful and accommodating and did everything to make my stay easeful and comfortable. He even helped me find accommodations in another city! He escorted me from town to help me find his house, gave me rides to the bar and gave his personal time and attention to ensure my stay was enjoyable and show me around the island. My only regret is the mist and not enough time to explore more. The room was big and the bed, very comfortable. A dish of chocolates on the bureau, a full Irish Breakfast and lots of chats about photography with a fellow photographer. Thank you again for a wonderful stay.

Response from Stephen:
Hello Kat. I'm delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that at my recommended house, in Cork. It was a genuine pleasure to host you and to talk about photography with a talented fellow professional. Of course, as you came in March there was a chance of the must descending in the mornings but I'm delighted that it lifted sufficiently in time for your sightseeing tour of the Island. Best wishes for your continued success.

Hello, I am a British-born award-winning photographer, writer and photography teacher, recently moved to Valentia from County Limerick after 17 years.

My recent publications have included a book of landscape photographs from South Kerry (which was featured on Irish TV) and a book of photographs of traditional Irish musicians.

I love music almost as much as I love photography and have often combined the two - and you will see evidence of my passions in the form of musical instruments and old cameras around my home.

If I say so myself, I'm a pretty good cook and I will enjoy showing off my skills by cooking a full Irish breakfast for you.

One of the things that drew me to this part of the world, was the stunning scenery and the fantastic quality of the light, which is the thing that really makes a landscape photo.

I love to talk about photography and I will be glad to offer some hints and tips should anyone wish to ask m a question. Longer teaching sessions can be arranged at additional cost, in the purpose built teaching room.

I am really looking forward to meeting you and adding to your experience of this wonderful part of the world.
