Private, sophisticated getaway with a distinct 1980s ambiance, full of subtle character. Perfect for couples or solo travelers, this spacious loft guesthouse is sure to relax, recharge, and inspire.

The space

Decorated with a mix of timeless contemporary and iconic vintage pieces, our private loft house is designed to delight and provide an exceptional getaway in Idyllwild. The rambling layout features six levels from attic to deck, with lots of space in all the right places. While nostalgic amenities allow for a time capsule experience, the loft house is also equipped with standard modern conveniences.

The living area under the loft features a 27" vintage CRT television, a VCR/DVD player with a selection of classic VHS tapes, Roku, and a comfortable sofa set to enjoy. An extensive catalog of additional VHS titles is available for guests to choose from upon arrival. Gorgeous forest views surround, and windows are dressed with insulative light filtering cellular shades to accommodate individual light preferences.

The living space between the entry and kitchen has a game table, cabinet full of vintage board games, puzzles, and blankets to keep cozy. A skylight and high ceiling brighten the area. Under the staircase is a stereo receiver with turntable and a small collection of vinyl records to set the mood.

The kitchen's high ceilings and ample windows give an airy, open feel. In addition to the standard refrigerator/freezer, oven/range, and microwave, there is a coffeemaker, toaster, and medium sized crock pot to use. In the cabinets and drawers you'll find glasses - juice, tumbler, red and white wine - and coffee mugs, flatware, plates, bowls, cutting board, cooking knives, assortment of cooking implements and kitchen gadgets, food storage/cooking casserole dishes, baking sheet, pitcher, ice bucket, bottle opener and corkscrew.

Surrounded completely by trees, the hillside deck is outfitted with four refurbished vintage patio chairs with two parsons tables between them. Perfect for relaxing with a book and a cup of coffee or glass of wine, it's also a great place to roll out a mat and practice yoga, meditate, or just stretch out. A propane grill is available for guest use. Smoking is permitted on the deck. Due to fire safety concerns, ashtrays are provided and must be used.

The sleeping loft has a low slung queen bed flanked with compact nightstands and reading lights, a cabinet for guest use, a 24" smart TV, and a spectacular view. The comforter and pillows are hypoallergenic. A fun space to hang out in or for guests to store larger luggage items, the cozy, triangular attic room near the bed houses several additional comforters and a folding luggage rack for your convenience.

The bathroom boasts a generous jetted corner spa tub and the handheld shower attachment can be put into a user-friendly ceiling fixture to allow for standing showers. Shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, hand soap, toothpaste, washcloths, towels, and a hair dryer are provided for your comfort.

Guest access

The loft house is set up to be your own private haven, and with the exception of the locked utility closet in the kitchen, is all-access to guests. Unassuming from the outside, it is situated behind the main house's garage, which is across the driveway from the main house, providing a very high level of privacy in regards to both the hosts and neighbors.

Parking is available directly in front of the loft house.

Interaction with guests

I am always available to answer questions, make recommendations or address concerns that guests may have, and am almost always less than 10 minutes away.

Astrid's place is the perfect holiday getaway. Not only is it clean, interesting, and fully-featured in all the ways described in other reviews, it's in a great location - slightly tucked in from the road (i.e., secure/quiet), but also a short distance (20 or 25 minute walk, 5 minute drive) from the town center. My friend and I felt good the whole time we stayed in Astrid's place. It just has a good vibe, and it is obvious a lot of time and love went into making it a hospitable place. I highly recommend it for those seeking a good Idyllwild stay.

Astrid has done a superb job of creating a wonderfully serene and convenient mountain getaway. The cabin is very close to downtown Idyllwild, but does not suffer from any of the lights or sounds of the town. The cabin is both tastefully furnished and well equipped, from the hot tub bath to the vintage record player, full kitchen, and equipment for pour over coffee. Though cabin is well suited to any season, we visited during the middle of a crazy heatwave. Astrid contacted us days before we arrived to let us know that Idyllwild was particularly warm, and supplied us with additional fans that were waiting for us when we arrived. She communicated superbly throughout our entire experience, from booking to checkout. We'd like to thank Astrid again (publicly!) for the thought and care that she put into both the guest house and our trip as a whole. We genuinely cannot think of anything else that she could have provided to improve our already amazing stay. Thanks again!

Astrid was an exceptional host. She provided so much information about the town and eateries and local events. The place itself feels like a treehouse! I enjoyed sitting on the deck and chilling with the birds and butterflies. There is no air conditioning, but she had 2 fans for the upstairs bedroom, one to bring in cool night air from the window and the other one for more breeze and in the dead of August, it was deliciously cool at night! What a peaceful, lovely spot!

Astrid provided a perfect getaway location for my husband and I. The interior is so light and modern unlike most rentals in the area covered in dark wood paneling. We loved the way the apartment is laid out with a large loft bedroom, roomy kitchen and great patio deck. We sat outside and watched bunnies and a deer cruise down the hillside. Looking forward to our next visit!

WOW!! That's how my boyfriend and I feel coming back from Astrid's place! Absolutely amazing and beautiful. We celebrated our anniversary here and it was the perfect getaway from life. The loft itself is spacious and the retro decor was the best. We loved using the record player and reminiscing to old bands while playing dominoes or one of the many games provided by Astrid. It was fun to watch an old 80's film from her collection. The TV is from 1987 but was decked out with all the modern amenities like Netflix and such. The deck is beautiful, forest views all around. We spent most of our time out there. There is a beautiful morning view of the sunrise from the bedroom. The bed was comfy but watch your head! Haha I had a few bumpy mornings. Astrid provides everything you need for a comfortable stay. She provided yummy organic coffee and a nice bottle of creamer as well as some bathroom essentials. She was an amazing host, constantly kept in contact to see if we needed anything. Allowed us privacy throughout and check in was so easy. She was so nice and you really felt as though she really wanted you to have a great stay. She also allowed us a late check-out and was just so considerate. Although you feel you are nestled in the forest, it's a close 20 minute walk to town or a 5 minute drive. The town is so cool. If you are into art, live music and good food this is the place to be. The coffee shops had live bands and great vibes. Everything was woodsy and had homey small town feel to it. If you are considering this place look no further! It is better than the pictures and once you step in, you are instantly transferred to tranquility. We can't wait to return. Thanks Astrid for an amazing stay!

What a great place!!! It's 80s themed and is done very thoughtfully. You'll enjoy the kitchen and bathroom from this century! The deck is very nice for hanging out any time of the day! Astrid responded to all my concerns and questions almost immediately! I felt very cared for. I didn't use the TV, stereo or grill. The guest house is very close to the village and trails and I took advantage of that! There are plenty of great places to eat there but the kitchen had everything I needed for cooking! Even a teapot :) I would definitely recommend this house for a nice getaway alone or with a special someone!

Astrid User ProfileAstrid is a superhost.

Hi! I'm a painter (both kinds) and musician (vox, keys, guitar) with a keen interest in design. I designed and decorated our guesthouse with the intent of it being a kind of sculpture you can live in for a bit; I've always been fascinated by the feelings associated with and ascribed to specific eras, and how our surroundings can shape our sense of time as place.

I also make instrument cables and hunt for vintage clothing, small appliances, household items and objects d'art in their natural commercial habitats, procuring for enjoyment and/or resale. I think that music videos are probably the highest form of art.

As a host, I'm here to help, but will mostly be out of your way to experience Idyllwild and your time in the guesthouse as unencumbered by our presence as possible. My favorite genre is comedy.
