Our converted barn is in a peaceful location and beautiful setting. In close proximity to a stunning local nature reserve and a short drive from historic Bury St Edmunds and Lavenham. The station in the local village of Thurston offers regular services to Cambridge and Norwich. The area has plenty of country walks, great pubs and restaurants, and the Suffolk coast is within an hours drive.
Hedgerow Barn is Grade II listed and has been beautifully converted to retain its original features. The studded beam work is all exposed, and it offers a large open plan living space with all the facilities you would expect. The Barn offers rustic period charm with 21st century living. Many of the furnishings are antique. There are two TVs, one concealed behind the cupboard doors above the fireplace in the living area with a DVD player, the other in the upstairs double bedroom. There is a very efficient electric heating system with an independent thermostat for every room.
The Barn is well equipped for self catering with many cooking utensils, gas hob and oven, microwave, toaster, undercounter fridge with small freezer compartment, dishwasher, washer/dryer, iron and ironing board.
To minimise the provisions you need to bring the following are all provided in the Barn: Muesli, Cornflakes, 1.5 litres milk, tea, green or herbal tea, coffee ( freeze dried instant and cafetière if you want to bring ground coffee) black pepper, salt and olive oil. You will also find kitchen roll, dustbin liners and all washing up equipment, including dishwasher tablets.
If you want to eat out there are plenty of places locally, many of them listed in the orange file in the Barn - ask us if you want any details in advance. Bury st Edmunds has all the major supermarkets (Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda ) so if you want to arrange an online delivery to arrive ahead of you, tell us your slot and we will receive it for you and make sure all perishables are put in the fridge/freezer. Additional fridge/ freezer space can be provided on site if required.
We also provide loo roll, all towels, tea towels, bed linen ( except if you are using our travel cot when you will need to bring your own cot bedding). You'll find shampoo, hairdryer and soap at every basin. We are happy to clean the Barn and change the linen mid-stay for guests renting the Barn for more than a week - let us know when you arrive ( or during your stay)if you would like this and we can arrange a mutually convenient time.
Hedgerow Barn sits in a 5 acre site and is detached from our property. Guests are welcome to use our walk around the horse paddock, and enjoy the garden. There are many mature trees and some fruit trees, from which, when in season, guests are welcome to help themselves. Guests are provided with their own outside sitting area and plenty of parking.
Interaction with guests
We will be more than happy to answer any questions guests may have throughout their stay and we are normally on site.
Other things to note
There is an antiques gallery on site which guests can look around. There is also a working kitchen where Hedgerow Cordials are produced. Further to this there is also an event/livery yard on site, to which, subject to availability, guests may bring their horse. Please email for details if you require this.Unfortunately we are not able to offer horse/pony rides or riding lessons but can suggest several local riding stables if you want to go riding.
- Children are very welcome at Hedgerow Barn and we don't put the price up during school holidays! We can supply a Mothercare travel cot for small children but you will need to bring your own cot linen. There is a door at the bottom of the stairs, and we have installed a retractable stair gate for the top, which goes straight into the upstairs bedroom. The downstairs double bed converts to a single, if preferred. There are two ponds in the garden, usually dry in the summer but often holding water in the winter so, though small children are welcome in the garden, they must be supervised at all times. There are many activities locally for children ranging from the local playground to the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds where there are aviaries and a playground (admission free) to a Gruffalo Hunt in Thetford Forest, Jimmy's Farm and the excellent Banham Zoo. Ickworth Park offers lovely walks, a playground and a cafe.
- Check in is any time after 3pm and check out any time before 11am.
- Well behaved dogs are welcome at a cost of £5 per dog per night. If you are planning to bring more than one dog to Hedgerow Barn please check with us as to suitability before instant booking. We have our own dogs here as well as horses and chickens so dogs must be kept under control at all times. Usual rules apply to clearing up after your dog. No dogs upstairs or on the furniture and we ask that you don't leave your dog unattended in the barn, and if you think it might jump on the sofa during the night, it is put in a crate.
