The space

Claregalway Castle, built c 1420, was the principle castle of the Clanrickarde Burkes in what was once an ancient small kingdom called Magh Seola – and an archaeological paradise. Excavation has revealed elaborate fortifications and ancillary buildings. The award winning restoration is strongly evidence based and has helped revive traditional crafts.
Claregalway castle was the hub of a busy Borough town. The ‘Nuns field’ between castle and the beautiful Franciscan Abbey (founded 1240) was densely populated and accommodated an Hospital and Convent.
The Great Hall of the castle attests to a sophisticated lifestyle and was a haven for musicians and poets as much as a local centre of power and ceremony.
Ruinous following the Cromwellian Siege of Galway in 1653, it was rescued by current owner as a roofless tower in imminent danger of collapse.
Now a cultural, social and tourism resource. It hosts the Annual Galway Garden Festival and is a venue for music, theatre, summer schools, heritage events and conferences.

Book now if this Castle is available! I've been using Airbnb for years and this is the BEST place I've stayed at. The value is SUPERB! Wine, breakfast, castle tour, newly remodeled everything...what is there not to love? We enjoyed the stay and explored a little more in the morning. There was no rush which was amazing. Top hotels can't compare to the hospitality John provides! The owner of the castle tower pretty much has the restoration project as a hobby as he lives elseway. It's a short drive from Galway and well worth the stay! No wonder Crystal is a top host!

We got there and not only was the place superb but we felt like family. We were shown our room and my wife fell in love with it. We quickly settled in, drank our bottle of yummy wine then went into Galway for a nice dinner at Quay Street Kitchen ..yummy. When we got home we were so exhausted from the trip we passed out in what seemed like a room that was magical. Next morning we had breakfast and did the tour of the property learning all the inside stories...AMAZING! This place is magical and we hated to leave. Right across the street is a church and burial ground worth seeing.

While trekking across the country with my girlfriend, we stayed in this beautiful structure. Magical. Feel lucky to have been able to spend a night here. Johnny, our host was more than gracious. Couldn't say enough good things.

Amazing stay in a castle! Easy to find - you see it from the road. Got an incredible tour of the castle and all the history - we even got to climb the tower! The room was very comfortable - we were staying here for our honeymoon and and it was perfect. Heated floors, very comfortable bed. Breakfast was provided in the morning.

Staying at Claregalway Castle was truly a highlight of our recent 2-week tour around Ireland. First, I proposed to my girlfriend here. Crystal and the staff put the extra effort to make the occassion special for both of us - and it's a truly a reflection of how much they care about their guests' experience. We also received a personal tour of the castle - and overall our stay was colored with many fun history lessons/ from Crystal, John and Michael. We arrived here as staff were preparing decorations and lights for the following Christmas festival weekend - which made our stay fun and festive. We were sad to not be able to attend the festival! It's just fun to know that both tourists and the local community come to enjoy the castle. As for the accommodations, we were treated like royalty. The beds were the most comfortable of our entire stay in the country (wish we stayed longer than just one night), there was always hot water (we stayed here in early December when the winter temperatures settle in outside), and the staff were attentive to all of our needs (Crystal booked a night out for us in downtown Galway). And a delicious breakfast in the morning. We would recommend staying here to anyone in a heartbeat for a unique and special experience while traveling through Ireland.

Staying at Claregalway Castle was the highlight of our honeymoon. The owner of this estate put so much love and care into the making of this dream, one that he had from his childhood. We were so blessed to spend time with Doctor O'Donoghue and John, one of his lead masons. John gave us a tour of the castle and told us a lot of the history behind it. He also served us breakfast the following morning, and we enjoyed his company throughout our stay. Doctor O'Donoghue showed up at the end of our tour, and he is such a lively and wonderful person. The place mirrors his sunny disposition, love for archaeology, and passion for people. When they showed us our room, there was a complimentary bottle of wine, and everything looked better than any hotel we've been to. It was professionally and carefully laid out. Our stay here truly was a fairy tale getaway, and we couldn't have been happier staying anywhere else. We would recommend it to anyone. Thank you so much for the service and fellowship you provided us! Daniel and Rebecca Burnworth
