Mount Hanover, built in 1690, is a unique period country house nestled in the heart of the Boyne Valley, close to Dublin city and airport. It is the perfect base from which to explore Ireland’s Ancient East and historic sites such as Newgrange and also Dublin city. Built over four storeys, Mount Hanover is an imposing place, surrounded by formal gardens, woodlands, stables, 100 acres of farmland and a walled garden.

The space
Mount Hanover commenced construction in 1690, the year of the Battle of the Boyne. The stables sheltered the horses of King James and romantic local legend has it that King James’s forces held out against those of William of Orange at Mount Hanover. It is said that the Bellew family, who first owned Mount Hanover, forfeited the property as a punishment for their support of the Catholic king, who lost the battle.

Legend also has it that the Great Emancipator, Daniel O’Connell spent a night in Mount Hanover in 1842 en route to the famous public rally on the Hill of Tara and that he took Mass here – it’s possible as the oratory is consecrated, with a fabulous original stained glass window.

The house was owned by the Matthews family for over five generations until 1985. The current owners bought it in 2015 and have carried out extensive refurbishment of the house, which boasts 7 large predominantly super-king size bedrooms. While retaining its period features, including cornicing dating to 1760, the house is also fully modernised with all mod cons, including central heating, WIFI, SKY ,Netflix etc.

Dinner can be arranged for guests in the dining room which seats twelve, with a large open log fire. The sitting room also has a large open fire and is cosy but spacious at the same time.

For entertainment, the house has its own indoor swimming pool, changing rooms and sauna, games room with dart board, table tennis and modern gaming consoles. Croquet can be enjoyed on the lawn where one can enjoy the pastime of kings. There is a patio area to the side of the house, perfect for relaxing during summer days with a cocktail or for having a BBQ. Or we have new all weather floodlit tennis court with a tennis pavilion. The tennis pavilion has a barbecue (gas and wood)pizza oven, smoker and sink. There is a conservatory which captures the sun from morning to dusk and is a tranquil place to read or enjoy afternoon tea.

The mature gardens have been well tended and over 200 young trees have been planted in 2016. A number of protected species of birds and mammals live in the gardens and the River Nanny flows through the farm, to the River Nanny Estuary and Shore SPA Natura 2000 site a few kilometres away.

There is a walk way through the gardens and woodland, which is perfect for bird watchers and those interested in getting back to nature. Both inside and outside, the house exudes atmosphere and a country house charm. It is an ideal vacation setting for family and friends.

Guest access
We have 9 bedrooms in total. You can either book the whole house out or a room of your choice. We also rent the house/rooms for private events like Christmas parties, Anniversaries, Family Get Togethers, Corporate Away Days, Art Courses, and Yoga Retreats etc. Unless a guest books the whole house out exclusively, the owners and their two children will be in the house and we would ask that you respect that this is their family home.

Other things to note
Mount Hanover House is conveniently positioned only 25 minutes’ drive from Dublin Airport, and Dublin City is only 15 minutes farther. It is less than 5 mins from the M1 motorway from Dublin to Belfast and makes a great stop over for anyone wanting to explore the north east coast. Less than 15 minutes away is the M2 which brings you straight to the north west of the country. It is also only 30 minutes away from the M50 Dublin Ring Road, which accesses all the major motorways which will take you to the west and south of Ireland. So Mount Hanover House is an excellent base for those flying into Dublin Airport and wishing to travel on anywhere in Ireland.

For guests who like to go horse riding, hunting, walking, fishing, shooting or golf there are numerous options in the surrounding countryside. In particular, three of the country’s best links courses, County Louth (which hosted the 2009 Irish Open), Laytown and Bettystown and Portmarnock Golf Courses are only a short drive away. Not to mention Royal Tara, Kileen Castle and Headfort, which are also in close proximity. Bellewstown Race Course is only a few minutes away and boasts the oldest race track in Europe, with two race meets a year. Mount Hanover is close to the sea and we can recommend numerous fabulous beaches for walking, some of which are relatively unknown.

Mount Hanover House makes an excellent base for exploring the historic sites of the east coast. Only 7km away is Newgrange, a Stone Age (Neolithic) monument which is the jewel in the crown of Ireland's Ancient East. Newgrange was constructed about 5,200 years ago (3,200 B.C.) which makes it older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. In addition, in close proximity there is Fourknocks, a megalithic passage tomb built 5000 years ago. The Hill of Tara, which was the historic seat of the High Kings of Ireland is also short drive away. We can make further suggestions for your tour.
