Where you’ll be

Dingle, Kerry, Ireland

This house, built in 1976 is located in an area of outstanding beauty surrounded by mountains that seemingly rise right out of the sea. The Cosan na Naomh ( The saint's pilgrimage path) passes the house. On the east it is overlooked sedately and majestically by Mt Brandon. To the west there is the sea and the 'Three Sisters' peaks. The house is in a village named Baile an Lochaigh which means in Irish 'Town of the Lake'. Actually it consists of a clustre of houses scattered between lower and upper Baile an Lochaigh. The neighbouring fields are grazed by sheep and nearby there is a pre Christian ring fort (lios) where one can enter and imagine to be back when early man lived around here. In upper Baile an Lochaigh there is a horse riding stable and trap (carriage) rides are available. There is also a pet farm which accommodates many animals including rabbits, pigs, deer, ostriches, peacocks and other birds. Passing through the upper Baile an Lochaigh there is a most secluded and beautiful valley named Cam Lochaigh intersected by a transversible river, the source of which there are ruins of an ancient habitation of beehive huts.
For the best view of the area a walk to the summit of Mt Brandon is well worth the effort. Ropes and mountaineering equipment are not needed though a good pair of walking boots are advisable. The path is clearly marked by crosses.
About four miles from the property there is a small fishing harbour and beach named Ballydavid ( Baile na nGall). There are two bars serving inexpensive food, also a post office and grocery shop. Nearby there is a long beach named Muiroch for a peaceful seaside walk. Also in this area there is the well known Gallarus Oratory, an early 6th century church built entirely of stone and completely rain proof after 1,400 years! It is said that if a person manages to squeeze though the window he/she will be married within a year! On the extreme north section of the Slea Head Drive there is a small cove with a jetty from where Saint Brendan was said to have departed these shores for America!
