Our 1887 Victorian Mansion is a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK of Opulence, Grace, & Grandeur - an Inter-Active Living-History House-Museum, with Victorian Gardens and Antique Cars. Close to Redwood National Parks & Ocean Beaches. Only one bedroom available and it sometimes shares the Hall Bathroom with 1 other. Guests have access to the entire downstairs – parlors, sitting room, library, and gardens. The kitchen is not available to guests, but there is a Keurig Coffee Maker, coffee, & 'Fridge.

The space

Besides your InnKeeper-host, the home is shared with medical professionals from our local hospital. While formerly serving Breakfast at our Historic Inn, we now no longer serve breakfast, and have reduced our rates accordingly. Additionally, our kitchen is NOT available to guests who wish to use its facilities to cook or heat or warm their own foods, left-overs, etc. We do however, offer both hot tea and hot coffee to all of our guests in the morning and at other times throughout the day, upon request. Additionally, for the guests who need refrigeration, we have a small guest refrigerator in the down-stairs back hallway, along with a self-serve Keurig Coffee Maker & K-cups .

While our guest common areas (2 Parlors, Sitting Rooms, Library & Dining Room) are down stairs on the first floor, all of our bedrooms are upstairs on the Second Floor, with 21 steps. Additionally there are thirteen steps from the sidewalk to our Inn's Front Door. So if climbing stairs is an issue for you, this may not be your best choice for a lodging experience.

Also please note: your upstairs bedroom's bathroom is a ways from our down-stairs Hot-Water Heater, so it takes a minute for the hot water to arrive. Your guest-room does have WIFI connectivity, a USB Charging Dock for your USB devices and a small desk for your lap-top computer.

Room Rates are based on two people maximum per room. Children of all ages are counted and billed as adults and counted in maximum room capacity. There are no circumstances that allow for a third person to sleep in the bedroom; maximum of two people only.

Our Victorian Flower Gardens are for your enjoyment, with Croquet available by request, as is the loan of bicycles, and a visit to our two antique cars. Our Inn's Wi-Fi information is available in your bedrooms, with Wi-Fi connectivity available throughout the house.

Guest enjoy the Inn's grounds and gardens and most of the Victorian Mansion's 4,000 square feet of interiors, except other guest's bedrooms and the hosts living area - the kitchen. The Kitchen is not available to guests.

The Victorian Mansion is our home. As such we expect a reasonable amount of decorum, genteel civility, and quiet. Additionally, our kitchen is NOT available to guests who wish to use its facilities to cook or heat or warm their own foods, left-overs, etc. We do however, offer both hot tea and hot coffee to all of our guests in the morning and at other times throughout the day, upon request.

Doug was a wonderful host! This was an extraordinary victorian home with so much detail in all the rooms that l felt I was in a mini museum; it was great! I'm glad I canceled my hotel room to experience this stay. I would definitely stay again next time I come through the area.

Doug's house is amazing - incredibly beautiful, well-maintained mansion with layers upon layers of things to discover throughout the house. You can seriously spend hours in there just looking around. Doug is an excellent host with tons of great suggestions for the area and knowledge about the history of the house itself. The house is in a great location, in a nice quiet neighborhood but an easy 10-15 min walk from the downtown/old town areas with many shops/restaurants/the boardwalk. We had an amazing time and I'd stay here in a heartbeat if I ever get the chance again.

We made the best decision ever when we chose Doug's place. Our only regret was only booking one night. The house alone is amazing and it would take days to absorb it all. Doug is an amazing man with a deal and a zest for life that is contagious. Eureka is an interesting town with an abundance of beautiful homes. Truly outstanding!!

Response from Doug:
Thank you Roger for your kind words. My hope in sharing my historic home with guests, is to give them a special 'treat' on their journey. Eureka has it's Giant Redwood trees, it's beautiful coastlines and beaches, and too, it's many fine Victorian homes. My Victorian Mansion is meant to add to an already amazing experience while visiting the Eureka area. It is meant to be so much more than just another place to sleep. It is meant to bring joy, wonderment, and enrichment to their traveling experience. It is a joy to share it with the many great travelers who pass through Eureka. Thank you again Roger for making me feel like I have been successful in that goal.

Interaction with guests

As InnKeepers and the Mansion's Docents for over 35 years, as you might suspect, we are quite gregarious and very much open to interacting with all of our guests. As our Inn is an Inter-Active Living-History House-Museum, and as we live on the premises, we are very much 'inter-active' with our guests - as much - or as little, as the guest wishes.

About Doug

After 4 years on the USS Hornet (US Navy) I spent 15 years at sea as a Merchant Seaman; 15 years in the U.S. Forest Service as a Wilderness Ranger, 15 years building and living 'off-grid' on a self-sufficient Homestead in the wilderness of Northern California. The last 25 years, my wife Lily and I have owned and operated our 3 Star, 4 Diamond Bed & Breakfast Inn - Abigail's Elegant Victorian Mansion.

Lily is a refugee from war-torn Europe, having spent 4 years living under Nazi occupation of her native Ypres, in the Flanders region of Belgium. She was schooled in a Catholic Convent and it was there that she acquired her skills of lace and tapestry making and needle point embroidery. Many of her works can be seen throughout the interiors of our Victorian Mansion.

Lily and I met while we were part of a 4-man crew that sailed a 34 foot Hans Christian sail boat along the Pacific Coast waters off California and Mexico. After six months at sea, on this small sail boat, we knew that we could survive each other’s company; so we got married at sea. “And the rest” – as Paul Harvey would say – “is history”. Together we have traveled extensively in all the countries of Western and Central Europe immersing ourselves in both their culture and history - and still have strong connections there.

I have a music appreciation of both the classics like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, AND the Appalachian mountain music of Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, T. Clarence Ashley, etc. I am interested in both the Ballet and Square Dancing; and I balance my appreciation of Opera with the traditional music of the southern Appalachian mountains.

For the past 60 years I have had a passionate and intimate love affair
with pre-1935 cars. Currently I own and drive two Ford Model A's: a 1928 Touring Car (two-seat convertible - no windows), and a 1931 Deluxe Coupe with Rumble Seat. Often times, if there is a guest interest and weather permitting, these cars are used to drive guests around the historic parts of Eureka.

As I am now ‘retired’, I have more time for wilderness hiking, camping, hunting, long-range target shooting and working at my wilderness ranch in the mountains of Eastern Humboldt County.

I also have a firm belief that -
1. The U.S. Constitutions's Second Amendment IS Homeland Security.
2. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
