Our experience was sub-par. The following walks through our experience noting the positive and negatives.
-- We arrived on the ferry and were unable to connect with our host who had previously agreed to pick us up. We managed by hiring a local taxi to take us to her house (cost 25EC)
-- When we arrived, our host was departing the country. She quickly showed us around, including a welcome sheet she had prepared that provided useful information about the house.
-- Our host kindly drove us into town on her way to the ferry.
-- Our host's house is actually two houses which was great for our group which included my wife's 12-year old sister. The deck is by far the most exceptional aspect of the house. It overlooks the bay and the mountains and is stunning. I cannot say enough about it. Had our whole experience involved just the deck, it would have been excellent.
-- Unfortunately, the refrigerator and fridge did not work during our stay. This was a major issue and we think our host should have checked the fridge before renting her house (she does not live there full time and thus didn't know it was broken). As a result, we were unable to store food, cook or drink cold water (or provide same to our 9-month old son). The problem was never fixed during our stay notwithstanding our repeated emails (someone showed up but failed to fix the problem).
-- Our host provided a welcome sheet that indicated laundry and cleaning was included. We found out later that this was only for her "premium" guests who stayed during the on-season. For us plebs, there apparently was an extra fee that we only found out about later ...
-- There are two beautiful beaches near the house. One has a path to it which our host did not effectively inform us about. As a result, we took a circuitous and difficult route. A map pinpointing the path would have been helpful.
-- Finally, we left a day early due to the problems and general ennui. There was cleaning lady who had done some laundry for us which we thought was included. Before we left the island, we stopped for some coffee and the cleaning lady found us and attempted to shake us down for payment for laundry and cleaning. She literally accosted us while we were sitting in a coffee shop and threatened to alert the police! We could have overlooked the other issues but this was too much. If there were extra fees, those should have been charged through Airbnb or indicated clearly before we booked (they were not). Then to be threatened by our host's cleaning lady ... simply unacceptable.
-- In conclusion, Michelle has a lot to learn to become a good host.
