The space

Named in the Sunday Times (Travel) as one of 'Top 20 Places for the Summer in UK or Ireland' 2012!

Note - this listing has 'live' and correct availability - you can book instantly - no need to enquire if there is availability - the calendar is correct :)

Croaghacullion is a traditional Donegal coastal cottage that enjoys a remarkable secluded position overlooking Lougheraherk (lake) in this, the most traditional and picturesque part of Ireland. You get the whole cottage, in 3/4 acre of land overlooking a lake. Glencolmcille village (shops, great pubs with traditional music, Folk Museum, cafes, is a 13 minute drive).

The cottage sits in the heart of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht in what is probably the most traditional area of Ireland. You can walk down to the beach from the cottage and you're unlikely to see another tourist, maybe just a lobster fisherman or one of the friendly, farmer neighbours. See more photos of this Donegal cottage. Just sitting on the bench in front can be lovely - you can usually hear the waves from the other side of the mountain.

Stay here to discover one of the most remarkable and beautiful landscapes in Ireland - we doubt you'll ever find better beaches than can be found locally, friendlier people, or such a sense of wilderness. These photos show the walk down to Port beach from the cottage, which feels like the very edge of Europe (9 times out of 10 you'll have the whole bay to yourself), or sit at home and enjoy the views over 'your' lough (lake).

Pets welcome - ask they are never allowed on sofas or beds please. Great place for dogs - enlcosed garden and miles of open mountain walking from the door, with fabulous beaches near.

Guest access

A detached lakeside cottage and about an acre of land, with direct access to open-mountain walking.

Interaction with guests

You'll meet my lovely housekeeper, Mary, who lives in the neighbouring house on the track on the way to the cottage.

The neighbourhood

The most unspoiled and beautiful part of Ireland!

Getting around

You'll probably need a car.

We had a great time in that lovely cottage. It is a lovely and cosy place and the surrounding is breath taking. When we arrived we had a chat with Mary and she was very warm and welcoming. Like all the locals we met there or in the pubs of Glencolumbkille.

This cottage is truly a gem--secluded, away from it all, beautiful, unbelievably peaceful. We were very sad to leave!

Fantastic period property, with mod cons added but not obtrusive. If you like solitude and authenticity this is the place for you. Leave the phone etc at home!!!

Greg's cottage is a total delight, full of interesting furniture, folk art, books on local history and culture, and tasteful furnishings that suit the rustic but comfortable vibe. The property is exactly as described, secluded and a teeny bit tricky to find (we used Greg's directions and an atlas and found it just fine, but I can see how it would be difficult at night!), but the silence and peace is absolutely worth the drive. Both the bedroom and pullout couch in the living room are comfortable and even without the fire on the cottage is very warm and cosy (starting a turf fire is an art, but we got it eventually!). The kitchen is well equipped, even has an espresso machine, and there is a food shop with a good selection in the nearest village, though we stocked up in Donegal Town on our way in. Mary, the housekeeper, lives nearby and was very kind to us, curious to hear about our travels and happy to answer any questions we had about the area. Croaghacullion is the most atmospheric and peaceful place I have stayed in a long time, and an amazing immersive experience for someone interested in vernacular architecture and folk art. Highly recommended!

Greg's place is sensational. The perfect rural Donegal retreat. No one will find you here! My kids loved playing with the sheep and sitting by the fire. My highlight was going on an hour long jog amongst the sheep down to the private dock, then up on the public hiking trails. It was epic. Can't recommend for people trying to get away from it all!

While it's a bit of a drive from the center of County Donegal to get to the cottage, it's worth it! A beautiful and quiet location, with a fully functioning kitchen. A run/walk down to the ocean is a must.

We had a great time at Greg's secluded cottage- woke up to shaggy sheep outside to share a coffee with and enjoyed the long walks around the beautiful countryside with barely another soul in sight. The wind blew so hard the one night, but not to worry as we were warm and snug inside by the turf fire!
