The converted wing of a Palladian Georgian house (built in 1750), now an idyllic, private, cosy two-storey retreat, with a bright kitchen/dining area upstairs, looking out through French doors into atmospheric gardens and the ancient monastic ruins surroundingThe Moone High Cross.

The space
Tucked into the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains, yet only an hour from the capital, Moone Abbey offers a hideaway from a busy and hectic world. Enveloped in countryside, with the river Griese flowing gently before it, the ruins of the 6th century Columban monastery of Moone behind, the picturesque Georgian house has an air of peace and serenity, evoking a thousand years of meditation and contemplation.

The accommodation itself is a two-storied apartment situated within one wing of the house. Accessed through a cobblestone courtyard, the downstairs of the house contains the main bedroom and bathroom, both bright, clean, and serene. The kitchen/dining room, recent refitted, looks out onto our atmospheric back garden, and beyond the wall, the ruins of a monastic abbey can be seen. The sitting room, with its open fireplace, evokes an elegant past, with plenty of books, and sofas upon which to read them.

The attaching farm provides guests with the opportunity to explore the farmland trails and taste fresh Irish milk and eggs. A little closer to the apartment itself, guests can linger in the walled gardens, play tennis on the private hardcourt, and discover the ancient High Cross of Moone.

Where you’ll be

Athy, Co Kildare, Ireland

Moone is a tranquil, southerly sliver of Kildare. Located in the foothills of the Wicklow mountains, the village itself is situated on the slopes of a gently dipping valley, of which Moone Abbey is the heart, hence the ancients located a monastery here. The village contains a little shop and post office, a church, and a park. Slightly further afield are a number of small pubs, notably the atmospheric Moone High Cross Inn. The nearest local towns are Athy, Baltinglass, and Castledermot, with Naas and Carlow only twenty minutes away.
