Bookeen Hall is a 200 year old church about 20 minutes from Galway City and within easy reach of the Cliffs of Moher, The Burren and Connemara.

We offer a private room (with a king size bed and a single bed) with a private bathroom. For larger groups we can make a second room available (with a king size bed), so can accommodate up to 5. We live here with our dog and look forward to meeting you!

We recommend having a rental car. The nearest train station is 8 miles away in Athenry!

The space

A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.

It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.

Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living/dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub. The guest room has a king size bed and a single bed and can accommodate three people.

Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.

Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.

Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.

What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to a greyhound called Mouse who can’t wait to meet you!

This place is a must if you are in the vicinity! It's a lovely renovated chapel in the countryside of Galway. While it's only about a ten minute drive in either direction to Athenry or Loughrea, the area itself is in the countryside and is very quiet and peaceful. The property is beautiful, unique, well decorated and very spacious. The hosts are lovely and friendly and are quick to give tips on local places to eat or to visit. Mouse was in the house when we arrived (friendly greyhound - very soft!) - I love dogs so it was great to meet him. I would definitely stay here again, I had a great time!! xx

Our stay in the church with Chris & Orla was lovely. The place is unique & fabulously done. Chris recommended a great restaurant close by called Taste Matters & a lovely walk through the forest to an old Castle, we did both & really enjoyed it. Thanks so much.

Beautiful old church carefully renovated by ultra friendly and laid back hosts, who went out of their way to accommodate us on a short over night stay. Breakfast was top notch. Would recommend.

This is a very unique experience. We were unsure what to expect when we booked our stay with Chris. Any expectations we has were met and exceeded. It is one experience we will remember and cherish. I loved the breakfast , so healthy and tasty.

Our group of five had an exceptional stay at Chris's property. The owners have lovingly converted a near-ruined church to a stylish home, complete with two fireplaces, two large bedrooms that can accommodate five people, a tasteful bathroom with shower and bathtub and cosy couches for resting and kicking back with wine after our long drive to Galway. At the top of the property there is a small tower for privacy or for flipping through a good book in peace. Probably the best part of Chris's property is how comfortable the beds were. Best slumber of my life! Chris helped us navigate to the property and was kind enough to wait for our late arrival. Chris also laid out a plentiful breakfast for us and provided us with shower amenities. After breakfast, we strolled around the surrounding farmland. This is a unique property and I highly recommend it. Tip: This property is a located in a small, tranquil town so if you are looking for a lively night out, it is best to have a car to drive to Galway city.
