A protected building and national monument, Bookeen Hall is a former Church of Ireland Chapel built in 1820. Part of the Dunsandle estate, the church was used for services by the estate’s Church of Ireland congregation. Built in stone, the rectangular hall with its large gothic windows and solid bell-tower can be seen across fields and woodland, making it a distinctive and well known local landmark.

It was deconsecrated in 1920 and 200 years after it was built it was given a new lease of life and converted into a two bedroom home.

Inside the interiors are bright, open and contemporary. The church is comprised of a large open plan living/dining room and two bedrooms. The guest bedroom available to visitors has access to its own bell tower/reading room with great views of the surrounding countryside and private bathroom complete with claw-foot bathtub. The guest room has a king size bed and a single bed and can accommodate three people.

Bookeen Hall is situated on the edge of Dunsandle wood which has some great walking and running routes, which your hosts, both keen runners, would be happy to show you. Quiet and peaceful, it is surrounded by woodland, and fields full of cattle and sheep.

Easily accessible by car, Bookeen Hall is just 2 mins from the Dublin / Galway motorway (Dublin airport is 2 hours away); about 1 hour from Shannon airport; a 20 min drive from beautiful Galway city; and located just a 10 min drive from the neighbouring towns of Athenry and Loughrea, both of which have a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and bars, and good public transport links. The church is ideally located for day trips to Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren region.

Enjoy our home baking with tea/coffee when you arrive and a continental breakfast each morning.

What to expect: a restored church – with a light, bright and homey feel to it. It’s also home to two dogs that can’t wait to meet you!

The Abbey is an amazing stay. It's a little ways away from major cities, but it's worth it. If you're looking for a quiet place to stay (that is really cool), this is it. Everything is beautifully decorated, and there is a very cool staircase to the top of the tower. Chris was a great host. He was really understanding when I couldn't down my arrival time, and he served an absolutely wonderful breakfast. He's also quite knowledgeable about the surrounding area and gave me some tips that really made my stay excellent.

Oh my goodness, this place was incredible! And Chris and Orla (misspelled I'm sure) were such gracious hosts. They were so patient to accommodate our family and answer all our curious questions. The breakfast was by far the best we have ever had! We joked that my breakfasts will never compare. . Thank you both for a warm welcome to Ireland. I'm in love with the country and people already.

Beautiful old church carefully renovated by ultra friendly and laid back hosts, who went out of their way to accommodate us on a short over night stay. Breakfast was top notch. Would recommend.

The restored church is just beautiful. It was one of the best places I ever stayed with Airbnb. The host was courteous and very hospitable! The breakfast was substantial and perfectly prepared. All in all a superb place to stay and my best compliments.

What a wonderful little treasure this place is... very quiet and peaceful, just what we needed to get away from a London life! Orla and Chris were the perfect hosts! Orla provided us with delicious healthy treats to eat and Chris provided great music! They also arranged for an evening meal at Taste Matters, which was fabulous food and wine! What a perfect way to start our road trip! Thank you Chris & Orla!! We hope to see you and Mouse again soon.. Sam & Sophie XxxxX

Chris is a very good host. To serve tea and coffee as well as very tasty cookies on arrival is an absolutely normal thing for him. Besides, his life partner Orla as well as Mouse (very cool and chilly dog) have been very lovely. The breakfast was very delicious and healthy. Fresh fruits, marmelade, toast, jogurt and müsli....note that it's not traditionally irish, but refreshing to have something like that on our journey. Thumbs up!
