Top trending travel destinations right now on Airbnb

Guests want sun, sights and hikes in locations you might not expect.

Airbnb is expecting over 300 million global check-ins this year. But the trending June, July and August bookings guests searched for during the first three months of the year might surprise you. Trending destinations are based on places that had the biggest growth in searches compared to the previous year.

Spanning four continents, the trending international destinations were:

  1. Kuta Utara, Bali

  2. Ksamil, Albania

  3. Barcelona, Spain

  4. London, England

  5. Gotland, Sweden

  6. Louisville, Kentucky, US

  7. Rome, Italy

  8. Rouen, France

  9. Marrakesh, Morocco

  10. Grindelwald, Switzerland

Top domestic destinations for US travellers

US travellers seem to be in search of sun and sand – though a few landlocked states made the cut too. The trending US destinations were:

  1. Louisville, Kentucky

  2. Laconia, New Hampshire

  3. Lexington, Kentucky

  4. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

  5. Panama City, Florida

  6. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

  7. Surf City, New Jersey

  8. Bolivar Peninsula, Texas

  9. Kansas City, Missouri

  10. North Topsail Beach, North Carolina

Top international destinations for US travellers

US travellers are also keen to go abroad. The trending search options were:

  1. Mykonos, Greece

  2. Niagara Falls, Canada

  3. Interlaken, Switzerland

  4. Amalfi, Italy

  5. Florence, Italy

  6. Bangkok, Thailand

  7. Sorrento, Italy

  8. Toronto, Canada

  9. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  10. Banff, Canada

The five destinations that had the most growth in bookings of private rooms between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023, compared to the same time the previous year were:

  1. Mapo-gu, Seoul, Korea

  2. Melbourne, Australia

  3. Warsaw, Poland

  4. Sydney, Australia

  5. Florence, Italy

If you happen to be a Host in any of these destinations, there are a few things you can do to get ready for the busy season. And if you’re not, you might find inspiration from this data to update your listing.

For example, if you have a pool, consider updating your cover photo with a great shot of it. If you’re near amazing hiking trails, add that to your listing title or description.

The top-booked Airbnb Categories between May 2022 and March 2023 internationally were Beach, Amazing pools, Trending, Iconic cities and National parks – so guests are prioritising sun, sights and hikes. Even if your place isn’t on one of these lists, you can use this info to highlight any aspects of your listing that follow these trends.

Wherever you are in the world, you’re part of a community that creates an experience for guests that can only be found on Airbnb. In a recent global survey of over 19,000 guests and Hosts, more than 60 percent said they felt travelling on Airbnb provided a closer connection to the local culture than staying in a hotel or resort.
