Understanding the extended cancellation option

Where available, the extended cancellation option allows guests to cancel their home reservation for a full refund up to 24 hours before check-in. Guests pay Airbnb more for their reservation, and you’ll still get paid according to your cancellation policy if your guest cancels.

Note: The extended cancellation option is currently only available for eligible hosts and listings in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ireland, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, and Vietnam.

Listing eligibility for an extended cancellation option

Most listings with moderate, limited, firm, or strict cancellation policies are automatically eligible to offer this option to guests. If your listing has a different policy, or you’re not eligible, you won’t have this option.

If you don’t want to have an extended cancellation option for guests, you can opt out at any time.

How payouts work with an extended cancellation option

If a guest selected the extended cancellation option and cancels their reservation for any reason before or after check-in:

  • You’ll receive your payout from Airbnb based on your cancellation policy—barring any circumstance where your policy may be overridden.
  • The dates of the canceled reservation immediately open for other guests to reserve.
  • There’s no impact on your cancellation rate or Superhost status.

If a host cancels a reservation where a guest selected the extended cancellation option:

  • The guest will be refunded, and you won’t receive a payout, just like any other cancellation initiated by a host. Fees and other consequences may apply in accordance with the Host Cancellation Policy.

Identifying extended cancellation bookings

There are two ways to identify bookings made with the extended cancellation option:

  1. Reservations: The booking will show the guest has selected the extended cancellation option.
  2. Booking confirmation email: The extended cancellation option will be noted in the booking confirmation email you receive.

Cancellations due to Major Disruptive Events

In the rare case that the Major Disruptive Events Policy applies, guests are eligible for a refund, travel credit, or other compensation when they cancel a reservation, regardless of the cancellation policy. In such cases, hosts won’t receive a payout, even if the guest had selected extended cancellation.
