How smart lock codes are shared with guests

Setting up a connected smart lock makes check-in easier and more secure for both you and your guests.

How smart lock codes are shared with guests

  • When you connect a smart lock to your Airbnb listing, every new guest receives a unique, automatically generated 4-digit code.
  • This code is sent to them as soon as their booking is confirmed.
  • For guests who booked before you connected the smart lock, they will receive their code—and a message explaining the updated check-in method—as soon as you add the smart lock to your listing.
  • Codes are shared with guests before they arrive, but only become active at check-in time and expire after checkout.

How guests find their code

  • Guests receive their code in their Airbnb confirmation email.
  • They also get reminder emails with the code 8 days and 2 days before check-in.
  • If guests have enabled SMS or app notifications, they’ll receive a notification with the code on the day of check-in.
  • The code is always visible in the guest’s Trips tab, along with your property’s address and the check-in and checkout times.
  • The trip guide also includes a visual of your lock’s keypad, so guests know exactly how to use their code.

Sharing codes with additional guests

  • If your guest adds other travelers to their reservation, everyone on the booking receives the same door code.
  • Each added guest will see the code in their Trips tab and in reminder emails, if applicable.

Sharing codes through Airbnb messages

  • You can always share a guest’s code in the message thread or by other means (like SMS or email).
  • You can use the “entry code” details in scheduled messages or quick replies. This automatically fills in each guest’s unique code for their stay.
  • If you need to look up a guest’s code to share it manually, you can find out how to find their smart lock code.

Connecting your smart lock to Airbnb is only available to certain hosts with listings in the US or Canada. Find out more about which hosts are eligible to connect a smart lock to Airbnb.
