What you'll do
Design your own skirt, shirt, culottes, dress, or bag and take home a one of a kind fashion piece! This experience supports the work of refugee tailors, and creates opportunities for them in their new community. Collaborate with a Tailor from Mali, Ivory Coast, or Burkina Faso to design your garment. We will meet at the Mercato Centrale in Termini Station and walk to our Atelier across the street. Learn about tailoring and natural dyes and fabrics from West Africa, as you enjoy coffee, tea and Roman pastries. Then co-design an original, made to measure piece- tailored just for you. Choose a style from our selection of models. Learn how measurements ensure a perfect fit and how a style is tailored to flatter you. We will then take a short walk through one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Rome to the Nuovo Esquilino Market, where we will meet international vendors selling one-of-a-kind fabrics. We will guide you in finding the right fabric, to suit your own unique tastes. Our team will finish your garment and deliver or ship to you. We tailor pieces for both adults and children and welcome young designers!
We are The Sewing Cooperative, an organization that creates economic opportunities for refugee tailors in Rome, through custom, made to measure, hand made products. This experience directly supports the tailors, and seeks to brings their skills to the broader community. My name is Lydia, and I am the founder and organizer. Originally from Ohio, I worked for ten years as a dressmaker for the NYC Ballet, Broadway, and NYU's Tisch School for the Arts. I recently relocated to Rome as a Fulbright Scholar to collaborate alongside and research the work integration of refugees in creative fields.

Where you'll be
Rome is a vibrant crossroads of culture and people. This is most evident in the area of Esquilino, which is home to a diverse population, artists, and the most international market in Rome, housing vendors and products from all over the world. We will spend our time in our studio, and then afterward walk through Piazza Vittorio and explore the market to find the perfect fabric to make your garment. We will also visit a historic Roman button shop.
