What you'll do
In most of the experiences related to the Cuban art, the hosts: curators and artists, show art studios of male artists; that´s why I would like to introduce you the valuable work of Cuban female artists, who despite being less represented, have a very interesting art work. We will start with the permanent exhibitions of Cuban Art in the National Museum of Fine Arts, to highlight the presence of women in Cuban plastic arts, since the second half of the XVIII Century up to the beginnings of the XXI Century.First we will see her as the object of representation, and later as an artist, with a greater influence after the Revolution. Afterwards we will walk to the art studio of Zaidadel Río, one of the most important figures of the contemporary Cuban art. In this charming place you will have the chance to appreciate the art work of the artist and talk with her about it while you watch her painting canvases. You will also have the opportunity to buy some of her works, because she has many options and little engravings in affordable prices. If any of our female artists has an exposition in one of the galleries of the city, which coincides with your visit,we could include it in this route.
I´m a graduate of Art History from the Arts Faculty at the Havana University. To do my thesis for my degree, I studied the magazines aimed to the women in the first half of the XX century, and in the first decades after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on 1959. All these magazines, together whit several articles from gender perspective, revealed me interesting aspects related to the history, art and the imaginary of Cuban women, that I would like to share with you,so as to offer another view of the art and culture in Cuba, andintroduce you the artworks of our main female artists.
