What you'll do
Alpacas take to trekking quite easily. They walk in a line, one behind the other on a head collar and lead rope. Our guided treks start at the alpacas' barn and ascend into the forest. Each trek lasts about 1.5 hours, with a spinning and fibre demonstration afterwards. The walk itself is at a very leisurely pace, and is not at all strenuous. When you arrive on site, the alpacas will be grazing, and we will call them in using their yellow food bucket! Simon and I will introduce you to the alpacas whist getting them ready with head collars and lead rope. We will have a brief health & safety chat as well as give you some idea of what to expect and some pointers on you can interact with your alpaca. Alpacas are not able to carry packs or people, so they will accompany us as we walk the forest trail. They are working, so we try not to let them stop for to nibble grass for long periods. We will stop for a snack break half-way so the alpacas will have treat, and we can too. There will be plenty of photo opportunities through your visit. When we arrive back, I would be very happy to have a chat about how alpaca fibre is used and give a spinning demonstration. We only trek once a day. If our scheduled trek time on a particular day does suit your plans, please contact us and we will change the time if possible.

Simon and I adopted our first two Alpacas over ten years ago. It didn't take long to succumb to the addiction and our herd increased from two to four. Then to no one's surprise, four became six and so on until we reached 12. It is kind of like goldfish in a bowl, alpaca numbers grow to the size of the land you can have. You have to watch out though, before you know it you start looking for more land. We now have 17! I am fortunate to have had an extensive background working with all kinds of fibre. I also teach spinning and knitting in our workshop at the farm. When we lived in England, we owned and operated a Mini Mill next to our knitting and knitwear shop called "The Naked Sheep".
