What you'll do

Madeira`s most charming village has a truly picturesque scenery. I usually call it the village of the viewpoints. The itinerary I made specially for you will show you how incredible the island landscape is and also the rich architecture built over the centuries.

I will guide you around the centre whilst explaining the history of the village from the discovery to the current days and also island historical context. Ponta do Sol was the third village to be founded after Funchal and Machico and therefore is a very important village to understand the course of the island's history. We will observe local life interesting things from corner to corner and stop at historical points and monuments.

We will also visit the church where you will find high value art pieces that will take you on a journey to the past. Similar to the surroundings the church is extremely exotic and captivating. Know more about a baptismal font unique of its kind in Portugal. As it date from XVI century I can assure you will have a glimpse of Portugal`s Age of Discoveries and the importance of Madeira to the globalization process.

Note that: if the church its closed (normally its opened for the experience) is up to guest cancel or not the day scheduled because church its the main attraction. I will let you know.

I was born and raised in Ponta do Sol. I studied History of Art in mainland Portugal. I have an MA in Cultural Tourism taken in 2013. I've spent the last years working as a researcher and providing some cultural tours to the community on my town council behalf.

I would be pleased to share with you the heritage of my island as a local art historian. Many Madeira landscapes are still not considered as heritage but In fact it is something shaped by humans with tenacity since the discovery to our days. From the coast to the mountains cultural heritage rise up from an epic and wild orography. The best way to understand Madeira's legacy is to walk and have close contact with its nature, monuments, ruins, art pieces, cultural traditions, people and their ancestors stories.

Welcome, i am here to make you understand genuine Madeira island.

Where you'll be

This is the smallest county site of the island. Nevertheless Ponta do Sol offers you good bars, fine restaurants and comfortable hotels by the sea. Public areas are very affordable and clean with old streets, monuments and mural paintings. You can sunbath on a beautiful beach and watch incredible sunsets from Ponta do Sol`s pier. The ocean birds singing at night and the rolling waves on the basalt pebbles is something very magical to hear
