What you'll do

We'll first tour the organic mini-farm and focus on its unique features - how the garden and animals are organised and integrated using permaculture thinking. We'll talk about how chooks, goats and pigs can all be used for various purposes on a self-sufficient property, and how to grow a wide variety of organic veggie, berry and fruit crops.

Then we'll get hands-on with seed sowing, planting and soil cultivation. You'll learn great techniques to grow organic veggies, berries and fruits - how to make compost and enrich your soil organically, how to cultivate and weed efficiently, how to time your plantings, and how to raise plants from seed to advanced seedlings before planting to make the most of your garden space.

We'll finish by learning how to milk a goat, which is a fun thing to try and also a handy skill if you're considering becoming more self-sufficient one day.

Lunch is provided as part of the workshop, which you can eat in at our cafe Home Grown on Piper cafe in Kyneton, which features healthy, tasty dishes made with organic, ethical produce from our farm and other local producers.

You can pick and purchase some organic produce, seeds or seedlings for your garden at the end of the workshop. The aim is to inspire you in your own garden, so you'll feel confident to take the seeds or seedlings home and grow them successfully yourself!

I (Rob) am a passionate organic grower with 22 years' experience. I supply veggies, berries and fruits to 50 families in Castlemaine and Kyneton. I moved to central Victoria from Melbourne twelve years ago, then moved from being a secondary English teacher to full-time organic farming eight years ago.

I combine innovative techniques from both permaculture and traditional organic gardening to produce an amazing variety and quantity of produce in a small space on my mini-farm.

As an experienced teacher, I communicate clearly and engagingly; I listen to and understand what you already know, what you're most keen to learn, and what your goals are for the future.

I aim for the workshop to be relaxing and enjoyable, while also conveying plenty of information. I want you to come away inspired with ideas and enthusiasm for your own garden!

Where you'll be

The workshop is held at the beautiful Metcalfe Mini-Farm, where we organically grow veggies, berries and fruits to feed 50 local families. It's a family-run farm of just over an acre, with a half-acre veggie garden, berry fields, small orchard, dairy goats, pigs and chooks. This integrated, compact, productive property is the culmination of a dream Rob in particular has worked towards for 22 years, including 10 years at this property.

One of the best experiences I've had the pleasure of attending!! Rob's knowledge and passion for market gardens and veggie growing is second to none. I learnt so much that l can now take back to my own veggie garden to try. Lunch at Home Grown on Piper was a lovely way to end the day.

We loved our experience with Rob on his property and highly recommend it. We learnt a lot about organic farming methods and got to try out many different techniques ourselves guided by Rob. Rob has a wealth of knowledge and a great way of teaching in this workshop. We really loved touring around the different sections and in the hothouse. We also developed a new love of hoes! and methods for weeding and turning the soil. After a great time on the property we were then treated to an amazing lunch down the road. We will be recommending this experience to many of our friends as its a great thing to do and only an hour out of Melbourne.

My 8yo daughter and I went on the school holidays. A great way to spend a few hours, first we had a nice brunch at their cafe in town beforehand and then headed to their farm - a nice way to see where some of the food is grown too! Rob was a great host and shared his many secrets and ways of utilising a smaller space for their farm. I really do hope to come back and give you a hand around the farm!

We went as a group for a friends baby shower and it was absolutely lovely. My friends and I spent most of the farm tour laughing and feeling fascinated, Rob was a lovely host, who is obviously really passionate about building a sustainable life. It was so much fun to meet the pigs, milk the goats and spend a few hours in the sun. Lunch afterwards was super delicious - and such great value for the drinks & food. Rob & Gunilla also helped me to personalize our day out as the location of the baby shower was a surprise. Thank you for a wonderful day, can’t wait to come back again.
